What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Rating from 1 Review Good reception welcoming, clean, clear and well administeredJim, Canada, 13 Oct 17

The treatment was excellent. The office layout and equipment was state of the art. The only off-putting was the social conversation between the doctor and his assistant - in a friendly way while I was lying there with my mouth open. The clinic seemed excellent. Good reception welcoming, clean, clear and well administered.

Root canals
When a tooth gets infected because bacteria is present in a deep cavity and it enters the nerve, the result is a very painful condition known as an abscess. A root canal is a treatment used to clean out an infected tooth and save it from being extracted. At times injury or fracture of a tooth may also require a root canal especially if the fracture results in the nerve being exposed to bacteria in the mouth. Front teeth are most susceptible to traumatic injury especially when participating in contact sports without the use of a proper mouth guard. Contrary to what many people think, most patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure.

Rating from 1 Review My tooth looks totally realHeather, Oshawa, 09 Dec 15

I am extremely scared to go see a dentist. The staff assured me that Dr Lee was very gentle, has small hands. So I made my first appointment and Dr Lee was working with 2 children in the next room, he was so amazing and kind, he explained everything he was doing. The kids were happy dealing with Dr Lee. So when I saw him I was at ease. I went for a root canal and a tooth reconstruction Dr Lee was totally amazing and did a very good job on the tooth. He did not judge me by the poor condition my teeth where in or because I am disabled and on odsp. I would highly recommended Dr Lee to all my family and friends. Dr Lee did a fantastic job on my tooth. The staff where very friendly, and his assistant was on top of things and made sure I was comfortable and at ease. My tooth looks totally real and matches the other teeth perfectly.

Rating from 1 Review I will definitely be making this my primary dental health provider.Tristan, Halifax, NS, 07 Dec 14

I was in the door for 16:30 for my initial fitting and out by 17:00. For the second part of my appointment I was there early again for a 14:30 appointment and was out the door before I was even scheduled to go in. The dental assistant there was very professional and thorough with the fitting and assessing any concerns I had. I will definitely be making this my primary dental health provider.

Root canals
Each of our teeth contains a long, thin strand of dental pulp—which provides the tooth with nutrients and nerves—that extends down to the tooth’s root. If the pulp becomes infected or injured, the tooth’s nerves die and, often, without endodontic treatment, the tooth dies as well. Root canals are designed to save such damaged teeth.During the procedure, a gap is drilled into the tooth’s crown and pulp chamber, diseased pulp is reshaped or removed, and the tooth is permanently sealed with a gold, porcelain, or tooth-colored inlay/onlay or crown.
