Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is a hands-on healthcare, providing a client-centred approach in the field of musculoskeletal health. It is concerned with identifying the underlying factors causing pain and affecting movement and function within the body’s musculoskeletal system and it intervenes to achieve agreed goals and objectives in maximising function and alleviating pain.

How can Physical Therapy help me?

Physical therapy is a mainstream and scientific-based form of healthcare with assessment, treatment and management of spinal health, pain, stress, rehabilitation, sports injury and performance. It incorporates a whole body approach in assessment. It integrates a wide variety of advanced soft tissue and joint mobilisation techniques to restore painfree function.

Physiotherapy focuses on providing relief from aches as a result of work or muscular conditions. It works by using a number of different methods to gradually increase the strength of the muscles, bones and connective tissues in the body; this helps to increase the range of movement and flexibility around the joints.
Physiotherapy aids:

  • Traumatic injuries
  • Sports injuries
  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Heart and lung disease
  • Back and neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Strokes

Pilates

Developed from the rehabilitation techniques of Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a safe, exercise system using a floor mat or equipment, that will help you look and feel your very best.

No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you.

Pilates improves core strength, flexibility, agility and economy of motion. It can even help alleviate back pain and other chronic ailments.

The central concept of Pilates training is strengthening the so-called “Powerhouse” or core of the body – the

deep abdominal muscles, buttock muscles

and the muscles around the spine.

All our instructors are fully qualified and certified to teach pilates, rehabilitation pilates, pre and post natal pilates. If you have been referred to us by your physiotherapist, please do notify us of your injury and get permission from your therapist before enrolling on a course. If injuries are serious, you may benefit from private lessons before joining a group course.

Posture Check

Are you a swayback? A sloucher? Military type? Does your bum stick out a bit too much?

The truth is the way you sit or stand can have a negative effect on your body over time causing niggling aches or worse.

Read on to find out what posture type you might have.

Poor posture while sitting, walking or even just standing up can lead to additional strain on your neck and back muscles, as well as your nerves. This excess and unnecessary strain can build up over time and give you the aches that you feel on your back and neck. About 80% of people suffer from back or neck pain at some stage in their lives.

Are you feeling any niggling pains or tension now?

When the spine is not in proper alignment, the back muscles, ligaments, discs and spinal joints are all under extra stress. If not corrected, this may lead to more permanent problems.Back and neck pain can be improved by correcting poor posture, stretching tight muscles and strengthening weak muscles.

How we can help you to become pain free?

Firstly we need to diagnose the postural problems that may be causing your pain.  Our expert physical therapist will check out for any imbalances along with muscles that may be too weak or too tight.

Abdominal Separation

We use a combination of support belts, specific exercises and special taping techniques to strengthen and reconnect your muscles.

It generally takes 6 weeks for your muscles to come back together. Immediately you will feel stronger, more toned and feel a reduction in any diastasis related back problems.

If you would like to make an appointment please contact the clinic.

Induction Support

If you are facing the prospect of medical induction, we understand this can be a very stressful time. Although we recognise that induction can be a very necessary procedure to ensure the health of you and your baby, we are also very aware that the pressure to have your baby can be potentially based to suit the schedules and protocols of your caregivers and not evidence based or best practice.

Why are you taking too long to give birth? Well in the main you are not. The standard dating rule of 40 weeks is based on Naegele’s Rule. This theory was originated by a botanist, who in 1744 came up with a method of calculating the EDD based upon evidence in the Bible that human gestation lasts approximately 10 lunar months. The formula was publicized around 1812 by German obstetrician Franz Naegele and since has become the accepted norm for calculating the due date. There is one glaring flaw in Naegele’s rule. Strictly speaking, a lunar (or synodic – from new moon to new moon) month is actually 29.53 days, which makes 10 lunar months roughly 295 days, a full 15 days longer than the 280 days gestation we’ve been lead to believe is average. In fact, if left alone, 50-80% of mothers will gestate beyond 40 weeks. Furthermore only 4% of women give birth on their due date.

In addition, the rule is also based on a cycle of 28 days and does not take into account any variations. Finally studies in Australia have shown over 28% of inductions are unnecessary.  But still our hospitals stick to the 40 week principals.

Pregnancy Massage

There are many benefits to pregnancy massage. Not only are you spending some well deserved time treating yourself, but prenatal massage can be a great help. One of the major benefits is how pregnancy massage promotes relaxation.

This hormone when abundant, helps to

soften the cervix in preparation for labour and keeps labour moving along.

Some of the additional benefits include:

  • Tranquil relaxation and reduction of stress,
  • Relief from muscle cramps, spasms, and myofascial pain, especially in the lower back, neck, hips, and legs,
  • Increase in blood and lymph circulation, which can reduce swelling,
  • Reduces stress on weight-bearing joints,
  • Improves outcome of labor and eases labour pain,

  • Enhances the pliability of skin and underlying tissues,
  • Provides support for the new mother with physical and emotional strains of mothering.

Studies done in the past 10 years have shown that hormone levels associated with relaxation and stress are significantly altered with weekly pregnancy massage, particularly in the last trimester. This can regulate your mood and improve heart health. These changes in hormone levels also

led to fewer complications during birth

. The evidence points strongly to maternal and newborn health benefits when relaxing, therapeutic massage is incorporated into regular prenatal care.

Osteopathy

€60  -  €75
Osteopath Consultation

Stresses and strains can accumulate over time and symptoms may begin somewhat insidiously. The Osteopath works with structural imbalances that are present in the body to restore a state of physical balance. Patients often report improvement in many areas of their health.

Most people associate osteopathy with back and spinal care for which it can prove to be an effective solution for helping with associated pain. Mechanical problems in the structure of the body can not only lead to aches or pains in the joints, tissues, muscles etc. but it can also lead to disturbances in the internal organs and the way they work. Irregular function may impair blood circulation or lymphatic drainage, and disrupt the nerve supply to any part of the body, thus having a detrimental effect on health.

Osteopaths use a wide range of “hands on” techniques to identify, diagnose and treat dysfunction in the body in order to restore the body’s structure and function to a state of balance so that the healing process can be accelerated, thereby improving vitality and general health.

Osteopathy does far more than care for back pain and postural irregularities. It also deals with a wide array of issues such as:

  • migraines
  • headaches
  • digestive problems
  • period problems
  • respiratory problems
  • vulnerability to infections due to a depleted immune system

It has a calming affect on the nervous system and can help with fatigue, mood swings or depression, disturbed sleep. It can help people resolve emotional issues such as anger, grief, depression.

€60  -  €75
Paediatric Osteopathy

Osteopathy aids the body’s natural self-correcting mechanism to relieve traumas that may have occurred during the birth. Using their highly trained sense of touch they can identify and treat restrictions and disturbances using gentle pressure and this is not painful or uncomfortable for children.

Acupuncture Follow Up Visit

A summary from our acupuncturist Kevin Callan

I have always had a keen interest in holistic medicine. Both my parents used various types of alternative medicine to manage the families health and so I had first hand experience of the exciting possibilities offered by holistic and preventative medicine. Upon finishing secondary school I was accepted on to the UK’s first Degree program in Complementary Medicine. This was a Bachelor of Science degree in the Health Sciences at the University of Central Lancashire. The course provided me with a great foundation in all the Health Sciences e.g. Physiology, Biochemistry, Psychology, Counselling, Social sciences and Research techniques.

During my studies I had a course of Acupuncture treatment for a health complaint and was hugely impressed by its effectiveness. I was primarily impressed by the sophistication of its diagnostic technique and its focus on using these insights to educate and empower the client to maximise their own health.

After carrying out some research, I settled on the College of Naturopathic Medicine as my acupuncture school of choice. Not only did this school have an established reputation in the provision of excellent Traditional Chinese medicine training, but also provided training in the discipline of Naturopathic Medicine. I found this training to be a perfect compliment to my science degree.

The combination of my training thus far, has given me a competent understanding of western medical diagnosis and treatment protocols. I believe this helps me to adapt the established approach of Acupuncture and Naturopathy to compliment western medical management of many conditions.

As a natural medicine practitioner I feel my role is to give space and time for my clients to express any concerns that they might have and to truly relax. I am passionate that my clients should leave their consultation with a better understanding of what they can do t

CST - Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy, or CST as it is sometimes called, is a very gentle hands-on approach to releasing tensions from the soft tissue of the body, and restrictions to the cranial bones (head) and the sacrum (the big triangular bone at the base of the spine) and in between.

These bones are connected by the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, and with them form what is known as the craniosacral system, which encloses the central nervous system. All of the nerves of the central nervous system have to go through these membranes on their way to and from the brain. Therefore anything that affects this bone/membrane system adversely, could have far reaching effects and is often at the root of such conditions as chronic pain, digestive and respiratory disorders, joint mobility, vertebral disc and jaw problems and much, much more.

Naturopathy

Naturopathy or Nature Cure is underpinned by the fundamental principle of the healing power of nature. 25 centuries ago Hippocrates said ”Health is the expression of a harmonious balance between various components of mans nature the environment and ways of life…Nature is the physician of disease

The Naturopath views their client as whole physical, mental, and emotional beings. Naturopathy aims to naturally maximise the bodies own healing ability by empowering the patient to address difficulties in the physical, mental emotional and spiritual spheres. The clients ability to manage their own health is fostered by formulating an individually tailored diet and lifestyle plan.

Because Naturopathy takes a general approach to overall well being it can be effective in helping with the management of a wide variety of conditions. Please contact us for a free consultation to see if a Naturopathic consultation would be of benefit for you.

I am passionate that my clients should leave their consultation with a better understanding of what they can do to manage their condition and maximise their well being. Educating and empowering clients is for me, the cornerstone of preventative and holistic medicine.

I also specialise in acupuncture facial rejuvenation. Fine lines may be entirely eliminated and deeper wrinkles diminished. Bags under the eyes can be reduced, jowls firmed, puffiness eliminated, droopy eyelids lifted and double chins minimized. Other likely results include: moisturizing of the skin with increased local circulation of blood and lymph to the face; increased collagen production, muscle tone, and dermal contraction; tightening of the pores; brightening of the eyes; improving of hormonal balance to help acne; reduction of stress evident in the face.

I hope to see you soon and wish you every health and happiness.

BA. Rel. Sc. and Education, BA Psychology, MA Counselling and Psychotherapy, Dip. Special Ed., Cert. Mindfulness, PSI

I have always had an interest in how people think, feel, behave and learn. This drew me towards the area of psychology, which in turn drew me towards counselling and psychotherapy.

My experience has taught me of the importance of viewing each person as an individual despite their presenting issue. I use an integrative approach drawing on a variety of theories and techniques including person centred, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and psychodynamic techniques.

I believe counselling to be a treatment where each counselling session is a safe and regular space for a person to think and talk about themselves and the world they live in. We are all capable of solving our own problems and finding our own peace of mind. Sometimes we need to understand why we are feeling, thinking or behaving in a certain way. Life can throw situations our way which may seem unmanageable; my aim as a counsellor is to support each person as they gain an insight and understanding into these difficulties, while also supporting them as they make any changes needed to make themselves feel better. It is a privilege to be present in a process where people bring about real changes in their lives.

Counselling can provide support for a wide variety of issues including;

  • Depression
  • Postnatal Depression
  • Anxiety/Panic Attacks
  • Grief, bereavement and loss
  • Addiction
  • Relationship difficulties/breakdown
  • Suicide
  • Self harm
  • Abuse – sexual, physical, emotional
  • Coping with disability
  • Self-esteem
  • Redundancy
  • Post – traumatic stress and trauma

Craniosacral Therapist and Homeopath

My career started in the Financial Services sector working in Wall Street in New York and the I.F.S.C. in Dublin.

A yearning for something new lead me to Reiki in 2002 and I became a Reiki Master.  I noticed a big change in my ability to focus my energy.  I was far more productive and happier in my own skin.  The ‘grounding’ element of Reiki was transformative for me.

In 2005 I enrolled in the Irish School of Homoeopathy training College. Four years later in June 2009 I graduated as a Licensed Homeopath. I then completed a 2 year CPD (Continuous Professional Development) Program with the Irish Society of Homeopaths to become a Registered Practitioner.

For me it felt like I had finally come home when I started my Craniosacral Therapy training. It is so heart-centered and sacred. Every time I place my hands on a client I feel so privileged. To work with the body and communicate with it, has been an amazing and enlightening journey. I am a registered member of the Irish Association of Craniosacral Therapists and also a Committee Member.
