James McKelvie, Specialist Eye Surgeon - Dr James McKelvie Specialist Eye Surgeon

They went above and beyondLee, US, 29 03 26

I went to an optometrist in Cambridge midday on a Friday with a lump under my eye as I was travelling abroad for two weeks, and thought anti-inflammatory eye drops would do the trick. The optometrist soon realised that I needed to see an eye specialist/surgeon. After calling a few without any success on such short notice, he managed to get hold of Dr James McKelvie (who operated on my mum a month earlier for laser and cataracts with excellent results)! Dr McKelvie diagnosed a significant right lower eyelid chalazion that required surgical intervention. I had no appointment- I had the kindness, compassion and generosity from a team who attended to me immediately without any hesitation. Post surgery, the receptionist and nurse drove me home as I had an eye patch on and was unable to drive. They went above and beyond! I highly recommend the team at Cambridge Eye Surgeons as their kindness, professionalism and care are outstanding! Thank you! Lee C

RLE - Refractive Lens Exchange US$2172 - US$3619
This is an excellent approach for patients over the age of 40 who want to be free of glasses. It is also a good approach for younger patients who are not suitable for LASIK-type refractive surgery (e.g. very long sighted or very short sighted).  The cost depends on the type of intraocular lens required. To determine this we need to discuss your visual requirements and perform a lot of ocular measurements. A consultation costs up to $60 out of pocket (referral required; less for Pensioners) which includes all examination, discussion and measurements required.
PTK - Phototherapeutic Keratectomy US$1086 - US$1448
Cataract Treatment up to US$2172
Laser cataract surgery or standard phacoemulsification technique using the latest technology for pre-operative measurements and calculation as well as the latest technology for operative success and precision. If you have hospital insurance there is no gap. This covers all expenses related to the surgery (surgeon, hospital anaesthetist - everything), but there will be additional expenses for the pre-operative appointment (around $50 for measurements related to the surgery).  Laser cataract surgery incurs an extra $500 per eye which is payable to the theatre on the day of surgery. This is not covered by any Private Insurance and I would be happy to talk to you about whether you are suitable for laser or whether it is not worth spending the extra money.  If you do not have insurance the price will vary according to the type of intraocular lens that you require. When we take out the cataract, we need to replace it with a clear lens that is suited to your eye and your visual requirements. Most people pay around $1500 for the surgery if they don't have insurance (pensioners; or $2050 for non-pensioners); this includes the surgeon fee, intraocular lens (non-toric), anaesthetist and hospital fee.  It is best to make an appointment and have your eyes assessed including all of the appropriate measurements for calculating the lens that you would require. You will need a referral from your local doctor or optometrist and you can make an appointment by calling . The initial consultation costs around $60 out of pocket (less for pensioners), but the follow-up appointment post-operatively is included.
Corneal Transplant
Corneal Surgery up to US$4343
All types of corneal graft are offered including DSEK, DSAEK and DALK. Cross-linking: price is $1500 per eye and I recommend at least a month if not 2 months between the eyes. I would also need to do some measurements to see if you are suitable for cross linking. Initial consult is around $60 out of pocket and post-op consults are free. Prior to the initial consultation, please do not wear rigid contact lenses for at least 2 weeks (or 2 days for soft lenses) in the eye that is being considered.

I have my 20/20 vision backStephen, Australia, 02 09 20

Underwent a cataract operation after a referral to Nik from my BUPA optometrist. Dr Nikhal Kumar is a true professional. The anticipation of the surgery was far worse than the surgery itself. It was actually a "surreal" experience as you are aware of what's going on but sedated. One month post-op and my eye is recovering really well. I have my 20/20 vision back. I must call out his staff as well. "Gina" is a great communicator and you feel as though she genuinely cares, whilst Sam (who does all the eye tests) is a friendly guy who makes you feel at ease. Very happy all round!
