What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial screws made of titanium or zirconium oxide that connect the jawbone and a dental restoration like a crown or denture. They are also called ‘endosseous’ implants or fixtures. They are an artificial tooth root. Once implanted, the implant integrates with the surrounding bone like part of the body. Dental surgeons perform bone grafting procedures to hold the implant in place for patients who do not have enough surrounding bone structure, or graft bone to help connect implants to the maxillary sinuses on either side of the nose when placing dental implants in the upper jaw.

How long does it take to fit a Dental Implant?

The time taken for inserting dental implants depends on the bone structure and needs of each individual patient. Some implant procedures take about 15 minutes while others may take up to two hours. Implant procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. Intravenous sedation is used for the comfort of anxious patients.

How long does it take to recover after getting a Dental Implant?

Recovery time after a dental implant procedure may take four to six weeks or up to 12 weeks for some patients. Patients can travel one day after the insertion of a single dental implant. Patients who require multiple dental implants or supporting surgical procedures should wait for around two weeks before travelling. They should meet the dental surgeon to get a certification of being fit to travel before embarking on their journey.

What should I do after getting a Dental Implant?

Patients should rest and avoid exertion after surgery. They should also avoid vigorously brushing their teeth or rinsing their mouth.

What are the alternatives to Dental Implants?

Alternatives to dental implants include fixed bridges and dentures.

I’m very happy with the work they doLeann, South Africa, 29 08 18

Big Red Tooth Dental has been my family dentist for around 7 years now. I’ve had root canals, fillings as well as cleanings done at this clinic. There’s nothing pleasant about a visit to the dentist, but they are quite good. I’ve been recommending them to others. I’m very happy with the work they do. Not sure what my emergency dentist appointment cost, because the medical aid covered everything. Even though they are good, I don’t give anyone a 5/5. There’s always room for improvement.

Dental Implants
Endodontic Dentistry is related to the field of dentistry related with tooth pulp and pulp problems. Damage to teeth, such as cracks or deep cavities, can reach down to the nerve tissue and blood vessels residing in the soft pulp of the tooth. Damage to the pulp can lead to painful swelling, damage to the jaw bones or muscles, and the formation of abscesses. If left unchecked, this could lead to loss of tooth or tooth removal. Damaged pulp once led to the removal of the tooth. With today's advancement, however, dentists use a procedure called a root canal to restore and protect the tooth's nerves and blood vessels hence saving the tooth. Benefits: removal of bacterial infection from tooth, removal of pain, prevention of further spread of infection throughout tooth to periapical tissue and surrounding bone. Procedure: A canal is made in tooth to allow for removal of the damaged pulp, root canal may be cleaned once or several times to ensure infection is cleared, in some cases, medications may be placed to prevent infection by removing germs from the teeth. After root canal is check and cleared, the root canal is filled. The tooth tends to be fragile after root canal treatment has been done, a post and core build-up followed by a crown is usually done placed over the root canal treated teeth to provide extra strength and protection

Dentures
The implant procedure is the same whether one or all teeth are missing. A panoramic x-ray and oral examination is done to determine implant site and bone condition, the gum tissue is opened to expose the bone area where the implant will be placed, in situations where there is insufficient bone structure, bone grafting may be a recommended procedure, once healthy bone material has been established, the implant is ready to be put into place. After the bone has been prepared, the implant is embedded and the tissue is sutured. The implant is left to integrate and heal with the jaw bone. The sutures are typically removed seven to fourteen days after surgery. When the gum tissue is ready, a special abutment or metal bar/ball is attached to the implant. If crowns or bridges are opted, an abutment is placed and this provides the support for the new crown or bridge. Today's technologies often include the abutments attached to the implant post. If overdentures are opted, the metal bar/ball is placed and is the the clip used to securely retend the set of new overdentures. A fter impressions are taken, the crown/bridge or overdenture is made. If crowns or bridges are opted, it is then fixed over the post and cemented or screwed on. If overdentures are opted, they are simply snapped onto the metal bars or balls.
