What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Thank you so much for the beautiful smileUte, Cyprus, 23 12 23

I was completely satisfied with my dental treatment at the Smalto Clinic. From expert advice to surgical procedures and the provision of full-ceramic crowns, you are in the best hands in this clinic, both medically and in terms of human interaction. Anyone who has had bridges and crowns for many years can be helped to achieve a “wonderful smile” by having the crowns renewed/lengthened by straightening (cutting back) the gums. In addition, the clinic can use the forms of the German statutory health insurance company and therefore enable a subsidy towards the costs. I would like to thank Dr Vasilis Vasiloudes, Dr Christina Sergiou, Dr Constantina Christou and the dental technician. Thank you so much for the beautiful smile!

The attention to detail the genuine care and the flawless resultsWilliam, Cyprus, 06 12 24

I have always struggled with severe dentist phobia, and finding Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry has been nothing short of life-changing. From the moment I stepped into their clinic a couple of years ago, I knew I had found something special. Now, not only do I go there, but my entire family does as well, and we couldn't be happier. The team at Yiannikos is absolutely amazing. Every member is incredibly warm, professional, and dedicated to providing a seamless and comfortable experience. Their cutting-edge technology is unlike anything I've seen before, and they prioritize a truly painless approach. For someone like me, who used to dread dental visits, this has made all the difference. What sets Yiannikos apart is their serene and relaxing atmosphere. It's not just a visit to the dentist; it's an experience that leaves you feeling cared for and at ease. Despite living in Paralimni and having to travel an hour to get there, I would gladly make the journey ten times over because the quality of care they provide is unparalleled. Over the years, my family and I have had a range of dental work done, from routine cleanings to more complex treatments, and every single time, the experience has been extraordinary. The attention to detail, the genuine care, and the flawless results—everything is a testament to the dedication of the entire team. Bravo to Yiannikos Centre for Holistic Dentistry! You have truly redefined what it means to go to the dentist. Thank you for transforming my perspective and giving my family and me the best care imaginable. You are all wonderful, and I cannot recommend you highly enough! 👏✨

Root canals
Understanding the root canal -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How did my tooth become infected? The two most common causes of infection in the pulp are deep cavities and fractures or broken teeth. Both expose the pulp to bacteria that are in saliva and are always present in the mouth. These bacteria can cause an infection that can kill the pulp. If this condition remains untreatable an abscess is created (pus that gathered down at the root tip and pass into the jaw bone). The abscess damages the bone surrounding the tooth, causing excruciating pain. Symptoms vary You may have realized that you have an infected tooth because it was sensitive to hot or cold, was swollen and painful, or had given you a bad taste in your mouth. On the other hand, you may have been completely unaware that you had an infection because you had experienced no symptoms at all. Root canal therapy When a tooth becomes infected, it is essential to remove the source of infection through root canal therapy. We understand that you may have anxiety about the procedure, but we want to assure you that it will be comfortable for you. Just have in mind that an infected tooth will not heal on its own and the consequences of the infection will only get worse and more painful as time passes. The procedure Root canal therapy often takes three or more appointments to complete. First appointmentBecause your comfort is important to us, we make sure that your mouth is thoroughly numb before we begin the root canal therapy. Next, we isolate the tooth from the rest of the mouth so the tooth remains dry and clean during the procedure. To get to the infected pulp, we make a small opening through the top of the tooth down into the pulp chamber. We use a tiny instrument called a dental file to carefully remove the infected tissue and shape the root canals to the desirable sizes and lengths. The
