What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins, also known as varicosities, are thick and dark blue or purple veins that are seen in the lower limbs of patients. They are caused by damaged or poorly functioning valves within the veins. Surgical and nonsurgical procedures are used to treat varicose veins.

How are Varicose Veins treated?

Varicose veins are treated by making patients wear compression stockings, by helping them to lose weight, by sclerotherapy, injecting  a chemical into the vein to make it collapse, laser and radiofrequency assisted procedures, phlebectomy procedures, where veins are removed by making small cuts on the surface of the skin and by surgical procedures involving tying or stripping of the varicose veins.

Are Varicose Vein treatments painful?

Minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins are performed after administering local anaesthetic to the treatment area. Surgical varicose vein removal procedures are performed under general anaesthesia. Patients will not feel any pain during the procedures.

When will I recover after Varicose Veins treatments?

It takes about five weeks to completely recover from minimally invasive and surgical varicose vein treatments.

What care is required after Varicose Vein treatments?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should wear compression stockings to prevent blood clots. They should not wear tight clothing or high heeled shoes. They should elevate their legs while sitting. They should not smoke or drink alcohol. They should not gain weight after varicose vein treatments. They should avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least two weeks.

Varicose Veins Treatment £1300 - £1640
How does VNUS Closure™ procedure work?   The VNUS Closure™ procedure is minimally invasive treatment that is currently being offered at the Manchester Vein Clinic. This minimally invasive treatment utilizes radiofrequency energy to provide an even and uniform heat to contract the collagen in the vein walls, causing them to collapse and seal. Once the vein has been closed, blood flow is redirected, and will track up the healthy veins that are in the leg. The VNUS Closure procedure can be performed on a walk-in walk out basis and under local anesthetic, allowing you to return to your normal activities the next day. The ClosureFast™ catheter is inserted into the vein through a tiny incision below the knee. Guided by ultrasound imaging, the physician treats a 7 cm segment of vein with a 20-second burst of radiofrequency energy, causing the vessel to shrink around the catheter. The physician withdraws the catheter, treating each segment until the entire length of the vein has been sealed. An average 45 cm length vein can be treated in this manner in just three to five minutes. What are the benefits of the treatment? The procedure will be under local anaesthetic so you will be able to get back to your normal activities the same day and should not impact your daily activities It has been clinically proven to cause less pain, less bruising and with fewer complications compared to conventional surgery and laser There is long term data proving its efficacy with occlusion rates being at over 91% at 5 years For more information on the VNUS Closure  Procedure or to find out about the range of treatments that we offer at The Manchester Vein Clinic, please contact us.
Sclerotherapy from £495
How does sclerotherapy work? Sclerotherapy or injection of varicose veins is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of your varicose veins. The veins are injected with a solution called asclerosant which damages the internal lining of the vein and causes blood clotting within the vein. In time, your own body will then destroy the vein and it will disappear. The solution normally used for this procedure is called sodium tetradecyl sulphate (STD) and is available in different concentrations depending on the size of the vein being treated. Normally STD is injected as a solution directly into the vein to be treated. Foam sclerotherapy involves making small volumes of the solution into foam by rapid mixing and agitation with a small volume of air. This can then be used to treat some of the larger underlying abnormal veins which would not normally be treated with conventional sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy will be performed on an outpatient basis with you being able to return to your every day activities the next day. You will have a number of injections where the surgeon will identify the particular veins and will inject the foam. This will all be performed under ultrasound guidance control. The foam that is injected will then cause an intense spasm of the vein and will help to close the vein. The procedure should take around 30 minutes in total although you may need more than one visit to treat all of the veins in question. What are the benefits of the treatment? The procedure will be only be using a number of injections so little or no anaesthetic will be requiredAs foam sclerotherapy is very versatile, it is able to track up very bobbly and tortuous veins where other devices may have difficulty tracking upYou can treat very small veins that other procedures can’t treatAfter your sclerotherapy treatment, you will have your legs bandaged up to

Varicose Veins Treatment £1695 - £1995
EVLA (laser treatment): One leg £1695   Two legs £1995 The first step is to come along for a consultation to see one of our vascular specialists. This will include a colour duplex ultrasound scan to determine the underlying cause of your varicose veins i.e. whether you have any faulty valves. The doctor will then discuss the treatment options with you. If EVLA (laser treatment) is required this will be performed as a walk in- walk-out procedure without the need for a general anaesthetic. The procedure takes approximately 20 minutes per leg. A small injection of local anaesthetic will be given to numb the leg, a laser fibre is then inserted into the vein using ultrasound guidance, and this is then slowly pulled out destroying the vein in the process. A compression stocking will need to be worn for a week following treatment. The majority of patients state that this is the only uncomfortable part of the whole procedure. 6 weeks after treatment you will return for follow up where a repeat scan will be undertaken to ensure that the underlying cause of your veins has been solved. At this follow up you may need some foam sclerotherapy injections to remove any outlying veins on the service of the skin. Although any symptoms (aching, itching, throbbing) will be relieved almost immediately after treatment, you don’t tend to see the full cosmetic results for about 2-3 months.
Endovenous Laser Therapy
Endovenous laser ablation, or EVLA, is the most common non-surgical treatment method for varicose veins. Using ultrasound guidance a needle is placed in the vein which needs destroying, a laser fibre is fed up the vein and the vein literally cooked so that it shrinks down and stops carrying blood. The lasering is painless but you will get some discomfort from the local anaethetic injections. Over 90% of patients are happy with the results. Recurrence of varicosities after treatment, in our experience, is less than 2%.
Sclerotherapy from £400
Foam Sclerotherapy is used to treat spider and varicose veins (if no underlying faulty valves). In this treatment the medication is mixed with air to form a suspension of micro-bubbles. The resulting foam is injected into the vein either directly or under ultrasound guidance. Because foam has a greater surface area than liquid, it is able to stick to the vein walls more effectively and cause faster "shrinkage" of the damaged veins. In clinical trials it has been found that foam-sclerotherapy treatment can be as effective as surgery
