What is the gastric sleeve procedure?

A gastric sleeve bariatric surgical procedure is performed for patients with morbid obesity. A bariatric surgeon will remove a large portion of the stomach of patients and leave a portion of the stomach in the form of a pouch. This pouch looks like a sleeve or tube.

Is it safe to have a gastric sleeve?

The gastric sleeve bariatric surgical procedure is one of the safest among bariatric surgical procedures. There are fewer complications compared to other procedures. In rare cases requires a revision gastric sleeve procedure may need to be performed.

What should you eat after gastric sleeve surgery?

A healthy liquid diet without caffeinated and carbonated beverages is prescribed for the first week. Soft pureed food is prescribed for a few weeks. After five weeks three small healthy meals are prescribed. Patients should drink plenty of water. Patients should eat healthy snacks or fruit and avoid fried snacks and carbonated drinks.

What is the sleeve made from?

The gastric sleeve consists of a thin tube made of plastic or rubber, called a bougie, inserted into the stomach to form a pouch.

How much can you eat after a gastric sleeve?

The gastric sleeve can generally contain only four ounces of food. The stomach has the tendency to stretch and stomachs can stretch even after gastric sleeve surgery. It is important to follow a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and eat small meals to prevent the stomach stretching after surgery.

I would recommend weight loss surgery to anyone who cannot lose weight on their ownCheryl, Australia, 06 06 16

I had a band first. I lost the most weight with this until I found I couldn't eat solids any loner. This came out and a sleeve happened. Not much loss from that so I went to an omega loop bypass. Weight loss very slow as it's my 3rd surgery. If I was doing it now I would go straight to the bypass. I still have 10kg to lose but have lost 40kg. I keep my eye on the bigger picture and am grateful for how far I have come. I would recommend weight loss surgery to anyone who cannot lose weight on their own. It certainly is not easy nor is it a magic cure but it's worth it if you treat it right. I was heading down a long path of illness as I get older but now I have the ability to avoid that by working with my surgery, surgeon and dietician. I was recommended by a friend to this clinic. I was very impressed with Kevin. He calls a spade a spade. No sugar coating. You find out the benefits and risks associated with surgery. His surgical skills are exceptional. I have trusted him with my life (on several occasions!). If you want rainbows and unicorns this is not the place for you. If you want the truth with a world class surgeon Kevin is your man.

Having Weight loss surgery is just the first step on your road to recovery. Evidence shows that a weight loss surgery with a strong multidisciplinary approach will have significantly better
Gastric Sleeve $4500 - $4700
Why choose the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy?Your quality of eating with the gastric sleeve is superior to the band or bypass. For example, patients with the sleeve can eat any food once the staple line has healed and in small volumes.*With a gastric sleeve the amount of weight reduction is in the region of 60-70% of excess weight over the first 1-2 years with a modest regain long term!*Gastric sleeve surgery is a good option for FIFO workers and/or people living in remote areas because it is a “set and forget” operation which requires less post op follow up or nutritional supplements.*There is no malabsorption of nutrients.*There are no long term risks of slippage or erosion which are associated with the band.*Operative risks are slightly higher than the adjustable gastric band but lower than the gastric bypass.* The operative risks decrease with your surgeon’s experience. Dr Padovan has performed over 400 sleeve gastrectomies. With gastric sleeve surgery the staple line leak is the most serious complication occurring in 1-2% of the patients.* Of note, Dr. Padovan’s leak rate is currently 0.2% despite the fact he performs a lot of complicated revisional surgery.Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a good revisional surgery option for patients who have the adjustable gastric band and have regained weight or have experienced complications.* This can be done as a single stage or a two stage procedure depending upon the amount of scar tissue encountered intraoperatively in the area where the band was.If there is weight regain with the gastric sleeve, a gastric bypass can be performed, often laparoscopically as well.*
Gastric Bypass $5200 - $5400
When we do the Gastric Bypass surgery, Roux en-Y, we want to make a very small pouch out of the upper stomach, to restrict the amount of food which can be eaten. That pouch is separated from the rest of the stomach, which is bypassed, by creating a new pathway into the intestines. This pathway is called a “Roux en-Y” (named after the French surgeon, Dr. Roux, who first described this reconstruction in the 1800’s). The bowel is cut, and reconstructed in a Y configuration, so that two parts of the GI tract can feed into one. Whether we do the gastric bypass surgery through an incision, or laparoscopically, the basic methods, anatomy, and the results are the same, although the instruments differ. Here’s how we do the gastric bypass surgical procedure laparoscopically .
Gastric Band
Gastric Band $500 - $4000
N adjustable gastric banding surgery (also known as lap band surgery) a hollow band made of special material is placed around the stomach near its upper end, creating a small pouch and a narrow passage into the larger remainder of the stomach. The lap band is then inflated with a salt solution. It can be tightened or loosened over time to change the size of the passage by increasing or decreasing the amount of salt solution. n Dr Padovan’s extensive experience with weight loss surgeries, gastric lap banding surgery can result in a reduction of excess weight up to 50-60%.* Most patients see their desired weight loss results within 2 years when combined with the right diet and exercise plans.*
