What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is the term used when one woman donates her eggs, for medical research, or to be implanted in another woman as part of an assisted reproduction procedure. The egg donor may be related or unrelated to the recipient. Once the donor has agreed to donate eggs, the eggs are retrieved from her ovaries through an ultrasound assisted surgical procedure. Egg donation supports IVF assisted reproductive procedures, especially for women whose eggs are of poor quality or for women who are too old to conceive.

How long does the Egg Donation procedure take?

While the actual egg retrieval process takes just a few minutes, the administrative and screening procedures for egg donation could take about a month. The procedure is performed under conscious sedation or mild anaesthesia.

What is the recovery time after Egg Donation?

The recovery time after egg donation is usually one month. The donor’s response to the post-ovarian stimulation medications will determine whether she can travel after the eggs are retrieved. This depends on each individual donor. The donor should travel only after the doctor certifies that she is fit to travel. It is important that the donor takes the prescribed post-operative medications correctly. The donor should not indulge in strenuous physical activity or sexual intercourse for a few days after egg donation.

Whenever I look at my twins: I remember Dr Michael Summer of The Bridge Centre London. I am not used to writing reviews but I must on this occasion because the expert care, empathy, support and guidance I and my husband received from Dr Summer at the Bridge Centre is second to none! After 2 failed treatments, 3 miscarriages and 1 stillbirth, I lost hope of having my own child. When We were referred to Dr Summer, the look on my face when I first saw him was like 'he will be like other fertility doctors I've met before I was totally wrong! Dr Summer was the first doctor that advised me to work on my body weight before ever starting treatment. Secondly, he advised I to go for a hysterectomy ( removal of uterine fibroid) and he assisted me with all the paper works necessary in getting a referral for the surgery. The very empathic doctor he is. I lost over 20kg body weight through dieting and exercise and the surgery was done at the surgery at University College London hospital a few months later. I am grateful for the services at the Bridge Centre not just because the treatment I had six months after my surgery through the expertise care of Dr Michael Summer gave us two very beautiful, brilliant and outstanding kids(a boy and a girl) but because it has a forever health benefit to me and my family. Today, I have maintained a healthy body weight, a very happy and complete home and a joyful mother to two wonderful children. Thank you Dr Michael Summer. One day the twins will you. Mr Dickinson Cowan brought my daughter into this world by C Section at The Portland Hospital back in 2005. I was extremely nervous but had the most comfortable and relaxed experience. He truly is a gentleman with a wonderful bedside manner and delivered my daughter safe and well. My aftercare was amazing. I had one to one midwife in a wonderful room with silver service. Cannot fault. I choose the Portland because I knew I would get fantastic care and worth every penny

The Dorset Fertility service does not offer egg donation however we have regularly helped in the monitoring of egg recipients, ensuring that their womb lining (endometrium) is of an appropriate thickness for that part of the treatment cycle. There is a wealth of experience at Dorset Fertility and therefore most units are happy for their egg recipients to have some scans there to avoid the necessity of a long journey to the treating centre for monitoring. Decisions regarding timing and change of medication will always rest with the treating centre. Usually the scans can only be done on a private basis for a modest fee.

Replacing more than one may result in a multiple birth. There are increased pregnancy risks from multiple pregnancy. For this reason only the best one or two embryos are transferred into the uterus.
