What are Dental Bridges?

Dental bridges, also called tooth bridges, are placed when patients have one or more teeth missing or have gaps between their teeth. It usually takes two visits to get dental bridges fitted and the procedure takes about two hours.

What different types of dental bridges are there?

Traditional dental bridges consist of two crowns placed on healthy teeth on either side of the missing teeth, or gap, and the bridge then covers the gap supported by the two crowns. Cantilever bridges are placed when there are healthy teeth only on one side of the bridge. Maryland bridges are bonded to the backs of teeth on either side of the bridge and are not connected to crowns. Implant retained bridges are bridges that are placed over implants fixed in the gums. These bridges are placed when several implants are surgically inserted.

Is fitting dental bridges painful?

The dentist will numb the area where the dental bridge is to be placed before performing the procedure. Patients will not feel any pain during the procedure.

When can I travel by air after fitting dental bridges?

Patients should be able to fly two days after fitting their dental bridge. If they feel any pain or sensitivity after the procedure, they should consult their dentist for medications or postpone their journey till the pain or sensitivity has abated.

How long does recovery after fitting dental bridges take?

If patients feel pain or sensitivity after a dental bridge is fitted, they should recover within a week.

How do I care for my teeth after fitting dental bridges?

Patients should follow a normal dental hygiene routine. Patients should brush and floss their teeth and maintain proper hygiene. Patients should avoid eating or drinking anything that is too hot, cold or too hard, for at least a week after the procedure.

What are the alternatives to fitting dental bridges?

Some alternatives to dental bridges are partial dentures or removable dentures.

They have been admired and look totally naturalPatricia, UK, 07 08 20

This is my husband's experience: After unpleasant experiences with the school dentist, I was not looking forward to the process. Noel Perkins and his team have been superb. Noel came highly recommended by my sister, who’d had equally unpleasant experiences as a child, her high praise was well-founded and justified the long journey for each appointment. The care and attention to detail have been second to none. Noel is both calm and calming, completely putting me at ease. He explained every single stage of proceedings. His initial examination was lengthy and comprehensive, I was given various options and was pleased to see, I paid for treatment along the way, not in initial one-off payment. Noel advised me that wearing dentures since I was a child had caused rare jaw problems, top and bottom, but he has efficiently overcome all complications, with meticulous attention to detail. I needed bottom dentures to be able to chew, NHS partial lower dentures had never worked, despite having 2 different sets. I had the implants put in; the same day I had remaining bottom teeth removed along with bone augmentation. It was a long appointment, the anaesthetic was amazing, I was awake but totally pain-free. I thought I’d been in the chair 20 minutes, but it had been much longer. Temporary dentures were fitted to click on implants. Truthfully the whole process afterwards was no more painful than a normal extraction. A soft diet afterwards was crucial. I had a couple of appointments to adjust the bottom plate while the gum was healing. I had restorative work on top teeth, root canal, crown all were pain-free, not surprising as Noel is highly skilled and experienced. I travelled to Carlisle to Noel's technician Robert Taggart, who is a master at his craft. He too spoke very highly of Noel. Initially, Robert made adjustments to the existing top plate, whilst bottom implants and gum healed, later he crafted the final top and bottom dentures, after the healing period. Having had NHS dentures for over 50 years, where impressions are taken and teeth picked up on next appointment, these Gerber dentures are a revelation, so natural looking. I had no idea how much care and attention to detail would be taken to make these. There were numerous fittings with different bite points but the end result is totally worth it. They have been admired and look totally natural, as well as being more comfortable. This has been a two-year journey, made longer by COVID 19 lockdown, but it has been totally worth it. From the beginning, Crossbank is not like any other dental surgery I’ve ever been to. The whole friendly and relaxing experience put me at ease and I have already recommended Noel Perkins to others as an empathetic, highly skilled professional dentist who truly cares.

Told what was good and what was bad after a good check upDavid, Whitehaven, 30 07 15

My wife failed to get treatment from NHS dentist when needed to refill temporary root canal filling which fell out. Decided to go private to get the required treatment, as told by NHS dentist's receptionist to purchase a temporary filing kit and do it herself. Excellent Was given a good checkup and told what was good and what was not about her teeth. The root canal tooth was refilled, but, was told that the tooth was cracked, and would not be able to be saved.

He took great care and attention and explained everything as he went alongPaul, UK, 09 01 18

I had been having problems with a crown that kept coming out. On a routine check-up, Mr. John Harkess found that the root was cracked and that was also the reason why I had been suffering from an abscess. He referred me to his colleague Dr. Satya Patel. Dr. Patel explained that he would normally replace the crown with an implant. But, because the bone would need to be built up and as I have a history of heart problems, he felt such a procedure could be too invasive. As my other front teeth were either cracked or discolored he suggested three bridges. However, because I have a deep bite, he said this could cause problems with the new bridges. He, therefore, recommended removing the silver fillings from my top front teeth and replacing them with white composite fillings which would allow him to adjust my bite by building them up to reduce the gap. The whole procedure took three visits. He took great care and attention and explained everything as he went along. He and his assistant Rachel were very patient and put me at ease throughout. I am very pleased with the end result and will have no hesitation in recommending Dr. Patel and his team to my friends. I am a regular attender at Stringlandgate Dental Practice and have always found the staff polite and helpful.
