When teeth are missing and there are teeth on either side of the space a bridge is the ideal way to replace the missing teeth. Replacement teeth can be attached to two crowns constructed for the two teeth on either side of the open space, this is called a bridge because it bridges the open space. The space left from missing teeth may cause one of several problems. Teeth may drift into the space changing your bite. This changed bite may result in sore jaws, gum disease, or decay (due to more difficult hygiene). Bridges are not removable by the patient. A dental bridge is a false tooth which is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth. Fixed bridges cannot be taken out of your mouth as you might do with removable partial dentures. The dental bridge can be completed in a week at a reasonable price, without complications. The natural tooth must be adequately strong to provide good support, while the gap of the lost tooth must not be too wide. It is essential to have a natural tooth in the front and back of the gap for the bridge to be effective. It is also necessary to grind / drill the natural tooth next to the gap so it can support the bridge. If either the tooth, or crown is damaged, then the entire two teeth and the dental bridge must be removed. The dental bridge cannot be used again on a permanent basis.
