What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

They were so professional and helpfulSab, Ireland, 09 04 25

I was seen by Dr. Charlene and the dentist Ivana. They were so professional and helpful. I came out of my appointment painless and completely satisfied after a cleaning and a filling. They’re great colleagues, and it’s so nice to see women's empowerment in action—working together and helping people feel better and smile. The whole Touchstone practice is great—my favourite dentist in Dublin 15!

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend themAnne, Ireland, 01 10 20

Had great treatment done under sedation here & wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. However, they have since stopped offering this service which has lead to a lot of difficulties finding a dentist that now does it.

Like everyone else, we are aware of the current financial climate. Patients covered by PRSI are entitled to a free examination every year, and we encourage people. There is a tax refund of 20% available for advanced dental treatments, including gum treatment visits to the hygienist, which we will organise for you. Finally, we can offer further discounts on multiple treatments as well as flexible payment options for advanced work. Our practice is equipped with the latest, state of the art dental technology available. Our digitalised x-ray system significantly reduces our patients' exposure to radiation; and along with our OPG machine, which provides a full-mouth, comprehensive x-ray, we are able to diagnose patients more quickly and accurately than ever before. Of course, disease prevention is extremely important to us, and we place an emphasis on good oral hygiene and dietary habits to help stop tooth decay before it becomes a problem. Your oral health is our top priority, and so we make sure to perform an oral cancer screening on all of our patients during every exam. Gum health and proper care should be a real priority for everyone, and dental hygienist Paula Cavanagh looks after our patients with care and expertise. It's amazing how many people refuse to smile or cover their mouths in photos. Cosmetic dental treatment is something people are becoming more and more interested in. Options such as tooth whitening, veneers,

Root Canals €500 - €550
Root canal treatment (also called Endodontics) is needed when the pulp (nerve) inside your tooth becomes infected through decay or damaged by an injury to your mouth. This infection may spread through the nerve system, which could eventually lead to an abscess, causing a great deal of pain and swelling. If root canal treatment is not carried out, the tooth may need to be taken out. Our dentists can perform root canal treatment to stop the infection from spreading and will preserve as much of your tooth as possible. Using specific techniques and advanced equipment, you will receive a local anaesthetic and the treatment overall should feel no different to having an ordinary filling placed. The aim of the treatment is to remove all infection from within the nerve system. The root is then cleaned, shaped and filled to try to prevent any further infection. A temporary filling is placed and the tooth is then left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is definitively filled. Root canal treatment is a skilled and time – consuming procedure and most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits.
