The dentist did a fantastic job of repairing my front teeth, they were a mess. I am amazed and delighted at what she was able to do. I thought they would cost a fortune to repair. Emer, the dentist, and her assistant were friendly and very patient. I was a bit nervous.

I highly recommend this dentist. The dentist went out of his way to give the treatment I needed to suit my budget. This is the first dentist I visited where it was not all about making money and more emphasis on the patients needs and happiness. The treatment and service was second to none.

Treatment Received: Fillings
Very pleased with the outcome. Dr Durkan was great and seems to know his stuff. Highly recommended. Got this filling done for the third time (other two times had it done in Smiles dental). After first attempt to fix this tooth in Smiles Dental, the filling came out after less than 24 hours. Second attempt lasted for a week, probably because I wasn't chewing with that side of my mouth all together, not to mention that filling looked like someone dropped it into my tooth and stepped on it (no shape whatsoever). Finally, decided to try Devon Park surgery and it was the best thing I have done in years talking about the teeth. Filling still solid after few months and looks like the actual tooth! Great job Dr Joe Durkan!

Dental Checkup

We recommend regular six monthly check-ups to maintain dental health. We also provide Fluoride Treatments and Fissure Sealants to help prevent decay and treat early decay more conservatively.

Taking care of your teeth can eliminate the need for any major treatment or dental complications in the future. Regular dental check-ups can identify any problems or early warning signs of gum disease, cavities or impacted wisdom teeth.

Despite regular brushing, flossing and using a recommended mouthwash, plaque still accumulates in hard to reach places. Hardened plaque becomes tartar, which can cause the gums to separate from the teeth and develop bacteria-filled pockets.
Because accumulated tartar can ultimately result in tooth loss, a Dentist or Hygienist
must remove it before permanent damage is made.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants offer a permanent solution to missing teeth. For over thirty years, dental Implants have brought naturally beautiful and confident smiles to patients. A dental Implant is a small Titanium Screw or Cylinder which is surgically placed in the upper or lower jawbone. The Implant replaces the root of the missing tooth, providing an anchor for your new tooth/teeth. When the Implants is fully integrated to the bone, a post is attached to it.

A Crown can be placed over the post to replace the missing tooth. Many patients
choose dental Implants over other procedures, because the result is a natural appearance which is permanent.

Dental Sealant

Sealants - Some children have very deep fissures (crevices)
in their permanent back teeth, which can be difficult to keep clean.
These fissures can be sealed with a resin film to protect the surface from decay. They are quick and painless to apply and can last for several years.

This can range from simple plastic or metal dentures (false teeth) which need to be removed at night to more permanent ‘fixed’ alternatives such as Bridges or Dental Implants.

Dentures remain a cost effective method of replacing missing teeth by providing the patient with a removable appliance. Dentures can provide patients with reliable biting and chewing function and acceptable appearance.

The main disadvantages with dentures are that they are sometimes difficult to tolerate and are subject to slippage during speech and normal movement of the mouth. The bone in the jaw surrounding the missing tooth/teeth continues to recede and this can lead to a gradual collapse of the lower profile of the face.

Endodontist Consultation
Endodontics is the study and expertise relating to the inside of the tooth. The pulp (inside of the tooth) is very sensitive and can be subjected to biting/grinding, bacteria from dental decay or fracture of a tooth structure. These can lead to exposure of the very sensitive nerves and blood vessels of the pulp, inflammation, infection and abscess formation. All of these will result in varying degrees of pain.

In some cases it is not possible to save a tooth and an extraction is required. Severe damage to the gums may necessitate an extraction. As the gum disease gets worse, the tooth loses the support of the surrounding bone and becomes loose. The gums can no longer hold it in place.

Teeth may need to be extracted for orthodontic reasons to create space to line up teeth properly. When teeth are very short of space or over crowded it can be necessary to recommend the removal of one or more teeth to allow the others to fit in.

We also treat troublesome wisdom teeth, as well as impacted/buried teeth and roots.
Many general dental practitioners refer patients to a Specialist for these procedures as wisdom teeth that are impacted can often lie close to vital facial nerves. They are carried out under local anaesthetic.

Fillings are used to fill cavities (holes) that have formed, usually as a result of decay or tooth wear. The decayed and weakened parts of the tooth are removed and the cavity is cleaned out.

We use all types of fillings from basic silver (amalgam) and white (composite) to reinforced porcelain (tooth coloured) and gold. We specialise in Mercury-Free Dentisty. We offer our patients the option of replacing old mercury or gray fillings with porcelain (tooth coloured) fillings.

In some cases, where the filling is very large, the tooth may need a Crown or Cap (which are fully tax deductible). These provide additional support for the tooth and helps prevent fracture. Those available range from gold or silver full metal Crowns to tooth coloured Porcelains.

Periodontitis Treatment

Your periodontal tissues are basically your gums! These are important to your overall dental health as they support your teeth. Over 80% of most adults have some form of gum disease (Periodontitis) and/or mouth odour, a problem that can be reduced with regular visits to our Dentists and Hygienists.

Many people are unaware that they have gum disease as there are very few symptoms until the infection is fairly advanced. Things to look out for are bleeding gums, sensitive gums, bad breath and receding gums, which are all early indications of gum disease.

There are many types of gum disease and they can affect both young and old. Heredity does play a part in gum disease so if a family member has it then a thorough examination
is advisable. Lifestyle impacts severely on gum disease so a good nutritious diet and
avoiding smoking is vital.

Gum disease can be prevented with good oral hygiene and regular visits to our Hygienist. Early stages are treated with simple scaling and oral hygiene instruction, which can be carried out in conjunction with six monthly check-ups.

Later stages are treated with Root Debridement (deep cleaning) and local anaesthetic is usually given. The treatment is carried out by our fully qualified and experienced Hygienists. They will clean and polish your teeth, advise you on how to care for your teeth and gums on a routine daily basis. The Hygienist can also administer Fluoride, Fissure Seal teeth, and give local anaesthetic if required. They also provide dietary and anti-smoking advice, all of which are part of our programme of prevention.

Advanced gum disease is treated with more complex surgical procedures.

Root canals

Endodontics is the study and expertise relating to the inside of the tooth. The pulp
(inside of the tooth) is very sensitive and can be subjected to biting/grinding, bacteria from dental decay or fracture of a tooth structure. These can lead to exposure of the
very sensitive nerves and blood vessels of the pulp, inflammation, infection and
abscess formation. All of these will result in varying degrees of pain.

In the early stages of irritation and inflammation the tooth is sensitive to heat and/or cold and the pulp can be saved by relatively uncomplicated treatment.

Once severe inflammation or infection sets in the only treatment is to remove the
diseased tissue with small delicate files, at the same time cleaning and shaping the root canal system, flushing out the debris and applying specialised medicaments
to kill the bacteria. After this the canal must be completely sealed to prevent recurrence
of bacterial invasion. It is important that the tooth is restored with a Filling, Onlay or Crown as soon as possible after completion of the root treatment. Leaving the infection
will cause a lot of pain and could be dangerous when it spreads beyond the local tissues.

Home Whitening Kits

This treatment takes approximately seven to ten days, depending on the shade you require. It involves wearing custom made trays which carry the whitening agent. The length of time they
are worn daily varies from thirty minutes to overnight. Typically, one would expect up to seven
shades whiter. Most people are suitable for this treatment, however, you should speak to your Dentist and discuss all options.

Teeth whitening has become extremely popular over the last several years. It is a great way to
improve your appearance, it is reasonably priced, non-surgical and non-invasive.

Teeth whitening kits from the Dentist produce faster and more effective results because they
contain a stronger peroxide-bleaching agent than whitening kits purchased over the counter.
Another benefit of trays and gels from the Dentist is that the trays are custom made and fit your teeth exactly. Over-the-counter trays are generic sized and could allow the bleaching agent to come into contact with your gums, causing irritation.

from €399
Laser Teeth Whitening

You are just an hour away from your brightest, whitest smile ever. Our whitening system is a scientifically advanced tooth whitening procedure which is safe, effective and fast.

Your gums and lips will be protected from the bleaching agent to reduce the risk of
sensitivity following the procedure. Any sensitivity that does occur usually disappears within 24 hours.

The bleaching agent is applied to each tooth and then exposed to an ultra-violet light which activates the bleaching process. This part of the process is repeated several times to achieve the ultimate result in whitening.

You should consider tooth whitening before you have any dental restoration work so that
the colour of Crowns and Veneers that are visible when you smile can be matched to your
natural tooth colour after bleaching.

The treatment is suitable for most people and is particularly successful in removing
unsightly stains left by smoking, coffee and certain foods. The results will vary for each
individual depending on the natural shading of your teeth and the level of discolouration
and staining present prior to the procedure.

Veneers can immediately straighten crooked teeth. Porcelain Veneers can whiten teeth. Veneers can be used to mask other imperfections on the surface of your teeth. Your Dentist will advise you of all your options and recommend the best to optimise the end result.
