What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

The staff are friendly and helpful, the environment is calm and relaxingRr, Canada, 31 01 18

I have been to the Matheson Dental Clinic for fillings, regular check-ups, whitening and cleanings. Dental hygiene has always been important to our family and regular dental visits are a part of our overall health. Prior to moving to this area from the NWT, I knew of Dr. Matheson as she worked in the same dental clinic as my longtime dentist. Dr. Matheson had a very good reputation in our community. When friends knew that I was moving to the Kingston area, Dr. Matheson came highly recommended by many of my trusted friends and colleagues who were her former clients. I do know that she is still missed to this day! I quite enjoy my clinic visits and I have had a few of them! The staff are friendly and helpful. The environment is calm and relaxing. You are greeted by friendly and knowledgeable staff. Donna has been the consistent face of Matheson Dental and my go-to person. She is engaging, friendly, very well organized and helpful. The place would be lost without her! My first appointment was with Dr. Sidhu for a filling and Laura was his assistant. I have seen Dr. Matheson for ongoing checkups and dental work. Her assistant Angela is pleasant and on occasion, I have seen her helping out at the front desk. Chelsea is the hygienist that I always see, and she is amazing! Excellent service overall. I actually look forward to my regular appointments at Matheson Dental.

A good experience for my kidsShelley, Canada, 17 09 15

My daughter had a filling fall out from between her front teeth about a year ago. It needed to be fixed asap. She also ended up needing extensive work done to her molars. My son needed work on his front teeth as well. Both kids were given laughing gas to help relax them and make the experience a good one :0) I would recommend Meadowbrook to everyone! My daughter is terrified of needles. No way would she ever sit and let a dentist put freezing in BUT Meadowbrook made her feel comfortable. They gave her laughing gas to help and Emily let them do all the work that needed to be done! They are just amazing people. The staff were so friendly and kind. Both of my kids liked the experience they gave them which is so very important to make sure as adults they keep going. Thank you so much Meadowbrook! See you in 9 months for cleaning!

Dental Crowns
Crowns are a type of dental restoration which, when cemented into place, fully covers that portion of a tooth which lies at and above the gum line. In comparison, composite fillings/inlays/onlays are dental restorations that are used to fill in or cover over just a portion of a tooth. Since dental crowns encase the entire visible aspect of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooths new outer surface. Crowns are used to rebuild broken or decayed teeth, to strengthen teeth, and as a means by which to enhance the cosmetic appearance of teeth. Crowns can be made out of porcelain/ceramic, gold alloy, or a combination of both. Dental crowns are often referred to as "dental caps".

Dental Implants
Dr. David Craig performs dental implant restoration by attaching artificial teeth to implants anchored in the bone below the gum line. After the anchor has been surgically placed in the jawbone, excess bone and gum grow around the implant, holding it firmly in place. An artificial tooth can then be attached to the implant. The end result is a strong, secure tooth that is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.
