What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Root canals
Root canal treatments are often required to save a tooth that has an inflamed, infected or dead nerve. The most common example is when a cavity is left untreated and the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth, sudden severe pain can occur due to the pressure inside the tooth. If there is enough healthy tooth structure at that point, root canal treatment is usually the procedure of choice.
Dentist Consultation
Dental Implants
Implants are used to restore missing teeth, whether it is one missing tooth, or a group of missing teeth. They can also be used to support dentures and keep them firmly in place restoring most of the function of missing natural teeth.
Dentures
Dentures are appliances that replace missing teeth. There are several types of dentures, including partial dentures, which can use the remaining teeth as anchors while restoring the missing teeth, and the complete dentures, which restore all teeth. Dentures can also be supported on implants, and in this case, they can either be designed to stay in place (can only be removed by the dentist), or can be removable, so the patient can also remove them from time to time.

I'm not hiding my teeth behind my hands or sad little smilesLinda, Spain, 16 11 25

I am way overdue for this review but was waiting till my hubby had been a patient also. I first heard about Lighthouse online and was a bit sceptical that they would cover things on the plan that many other dental offices were charging extras for! I was one of those seniors who just never seemed to have enough money for my dental care. I hadn't been to a dentist in over 10 years. SO when we heard of the new senior dental coverage plan, we called right away. I had an apt for an hour later! All my dental work was 100% covered! I needed fillings- extractions, partial plate- plus the standards- x-rays-and my roots filled. Not one penny out of our pockets! I was so impressed with how quickly the work was done. All was done, including the plate, in a month and a half. They are so friendly and caring, I was even more impressed. Best of all, I have a wonderful, natural-looking looking beautiful smile. 'I'm not hiding my teeth behind my hands or sad little smiles. Hubbie, who isn't very comfortable in the chair, was treated so well that after only three appointments, he was actually feeling comfortable with his treatments! I can not recommend them enough! If there were more room, I would go on forever. LOL

Root canals
Each of our teeth contains a long, thin strand of dental pulp—which provides the tooth with nutrients and nerves—that extends down to the tooth’s root. If the pulp becomes infected or injured, the tooth’s nerves die and, often, without endodontic treatment, the tooth dies as well. Root canals are designed to save such damaged teeth. During the procedure, a gap is drilled into the tooth’s crown and pulp chamber, diseased pulp is reshaped or removed, and the tooth is permanently sealed with a gold, porcelain, or tooth-colored inlay/onlay or crown.
Dentist Consultation
Dental Implants
Dr. David Craig performs dental implant restoration by attaching artificial teeth to implants anchored in the bone below the gum line. After the anchor has been surgically placed in the jawbone, excess bone and gum grow around the implant, holding it firmly in place. An artificial tooth can then be attached to the implant. The end result is a strong, secure tooth that is virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Nothing but 5 stars hereKimberly, Canada, 26 01 25

I have been a patient of Dr. Khan for many years. He has always provided very thorough care to my family and me. Recently, over the Christmas holidays, Dr. Khan squeezed me in to see about a bad tooth infection. He and his staff were extremely busy, yet they made time for me. The new office administrator is wonderful, Byron took the time to hear me on the phone, speak to Dr. Khan, and get me in right away. Nothing but 5 stars here.
