What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Dental Crowns AU$1250 - AU$1375
Artificial crowns or tooth caps are fitted over a tooth that is chipped, broken or weakened and serves to strengthen the tooth and increase it’s longevity. You will need at least two appointments, as we need to prepare your teeth and take impressions of them, and then send the impressions off to the lab for the crown to be made. In the meantime, we will put a temporary crown on your prepared tooth to protect it. When the crown is sent back from the lab, we can fit it onto your prepared tooth. Once fitted, the crown should feel completely comfortable and natural in your mouth and should last for many years, however, factors such as your oral hygiene and oral health will affect exactly how long they last. We will show you how to clean your crown properly in order to ensure they last for as long as they can.
Braces AU$4500 - AU$5500
What are the types of orthodontic treatments? Braces – Traditional metal or modern ceramic brackets are attached to each tooth and an archwire is threaded through. The constant pressure exerted on the teeth and bones by the wire will gradually move the teeth in to the desired position. Elastic bands are stretched between the upper and lower braces if additional force is required to move the teeth. Clear aligners – Clear aligners such as the Invisalign, can be used to correct many misalignment and crowding issues without the discomfort and appearance of metal braces and wires. Clear aligners need to be worn continuously except during eating and with time will apply gradual pressure on teeth and bones to move them into the desired position. Plates – Plates are small plastic devices that can be used in the mouth to push teeth in to the desired position or hold them in place. Unlike traditional braces which are attached to the teeth, plates can be taken in and out of the mouth.
Porcelain Veneers AU$900 - AU$1100
Porcelain veneers are thin shells of tooth colored porcelain that can be chemically bonded to the tooth to hide any aesthetic issues such as cracked, broken, chipped, discolored, or slightly misaligned teeth. They are more conservative than crowns and can be used on strong and healthy teeth to improve their appearance. Two appointments will be necessary to prepare the teeth and fit the veneers. It is possible to get a range of colors and shapes with veneers, so please be clear with your dentist about exactly what you are expecting and let us know at each step if you are completely satisfied with the veneers so that we can work with you to help you achieve the smile you desire. If you are unhappy with the color or shape of the veneer that is made in the lab, please discuss your concerns with our friendly dentists as soon as you see it and before they cement it onto your teeth – once the veneer is cemented onto the tooth, it is difficult to adjust the color and shape.
Root Canals AU$980 - AU$1380
Millions of teeth are saved with root canal treatment every year. Root canal treatment can help to save your smile and take away pain from an infected or inflamed pulp. Without root treatment, there may be an abscess formed at the tip of the root and there will be constant and often unbearable pain. The procedure involves removing the infected pulp inside the tooth. We will then place some medication inside the root canal system to settle it down. If there is no sign of infection or inflammation at the review appointment after the pulp has been removed, then we can proceed to carefully shape and disinfect each canal in the tooth. Once this has been completed, the tooth is ready to be restored. We will first place a rubber like material inside the canals to seal them and prevent further infection with bacteria. Afterwards, the tooth can be restored with either a filling or a crown. It is recommended in most instances that the root treated tooth be restored with a crown to maximise the longevity of the root canal treatment and prevent future infections.

Dental Crowns
A crown is a dental restoration which completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. Crowns are required when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth. They are bonded to the tooth using a dental cement. Preparation of the tooth involves permanently removing much of the tooths original structure, including portions that might still be healthy and structurally sound. All currently available materials for making crowns are not as good as healthy, natural tooth structure. Teeth should only be crowned after evaluation indicates the crown will outweigh the disadvantage of needing to remove some healthy parts of the tooth. This can be a very complex evaluation and requires the experience of a dentist such as Dr Cameron.

Root canals AU$600 - AU$1400
The main aim of root canal treatment also known as endodontic treatment is to save a tooth that has been badly damaged due to decay, disease or injury. When the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury root therapy is needed. Infection or inflammation of the pulp can be caused by: Repeated dental work to the toothBreakdown of a filling or crown A deep cavity Trauma Gum disease Crack or chip in the tooth Extreme wear Symptoms may include pain, sensitivity to heat or cold, tooth discolouration and swelling or soreness in the gums surrounding the tooth. If the pulp cannot repair itself it will initially become inflamed. If not treated it will die and become infected. It is important to contact us at Finesse Dental as soon as possible if you experience any of the symptoms of an infected pulp.
