What is a Tummy Tuck?

Tummy Tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure performed to reduce abdominal fat. The result is a slimmer and firmer abdomen.

How is a Tummy Tuck procedure done?

To perform a tummy tuck procedure, first general anaesthesia is administered. For patients with large tummies, the surgeon will cut the abdomen horizontally between the hip bones and contour the abdominal muscles, skin and tissues. The surgeon will place drainage tubes under the skin if required. Patients with fat deposits only below their navel will need a shorter and less complex procedure where the surgeon will make a smaller incision and perform key-hole surgery, inserting a small camera to see what needs to be done.

What are the alternatives to a Tummy Tuck?

Alternatives to a tummy tuck procedure are liposuction procedures, diet and exercise, and radiofrequency or laser assisted procedures to reduce abdominal fat.

What is the recovery time after a Tummy Tuck?

Patients recover from a mini or partial tummy tuck procedure within a month but full recovery after a full tummy tuck procedure will take about 6 months.

Tummy Tuck vs Mini Tummy Tuck

The full tummy tuck procedure is employed when patients require the contouring of the entire abdominal region. The procedure takes about four to five hours to complete. It takes about six months to completely recover from a tummy tuck procedure. A mini tummy tuck procedure is for patients who have excessive localized fat in their lower abdomen. The procedure is minimally invasive and takes about one hour. Patients recover from a mini tummy tuck procedure within a month.

How long does swelling last after Tummy Tuck?

Swelling after a tummy tuck procedure may last for about six months.

I had my tummy tuck and liposuction operation on 8/7/17 at Spire Hospital Elland. My consultant was Mr. A. Marajan who I consider to be very special as he performed such a miracle on my tummy! As a child I was always overweight and after having 4 children and losing then gaining weight several times over the years I was left with flabby skin which no matter what I did or how much weight I lost it was never going to improve. Over the last 20 years, I have thought about having a tummy tuck and what it would be like to have a 'flat stomach' but either I didn't have the money or when I did, I decided to spend it on Christmas or a cruise! Then earlier this year 2 things happened. Firstly my younger brother died suddenly of a heart attack, no warning, one minute he was here, then next he was gone and the other I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which meant I had to stick to a strict diabetic diet. While on the diet I found I was losing weight again very quickly, after about 6 weeks I began to see the flabby/folds of skin reappear and started thinking about the possibility of a tummy tuck once again, this time, however, things were different. 1: I had the money, 2: due to the summer holidays I could take time off to recover as I'm a Maths Lecturer and 3 as my brother had died so suddenly I now had a new outlook on life, which is life is far too short for all of us so just do it! So I just did it! I rang Spire Hospital who I found online when I googled tummy tuck various options came up and it was obvious I could pay as little or as much as I wanted and I could go anywhere in the world to have the procedure done. There was so much choice, how was I going to decide? The one and only thing I knew for sure was that as this was going to be a big operation and totally life changing I wanted to know that the outcome would be a successful one with as little complications as possible. The cost was very much a second thought. I wanted to make sure that I would be looked after and guided to make the best decision for me. I chose Spire because they were smaller than other leading companies as I thought I would just be a number rather than a patient, also the hospital was less than 30 minutes away from home, no flights to foreign countries or languages for me. Things were going to be hard enough without adding a language barrier into the mix! So I bit the bullet and phoned the hospital. I spoke to the receptionist who was lovely and was able to answer my questions with confidence and clarity, calming my nerves. How can you be so nervous just making a phone call? By the time I put the phone down I had an appointment to see Mr. Marajan in 2 weeks time, knew the all inclusive price, how long I could expect to stay in the hospital and what the recovery time would be. Fast forward 2 weeks and I found myself sitting in a very nice waiting room complete with flowers and complimentary coffee machine! I was called right on time, no 3-hour wait when you pay privately and was shown into the consultation room where I met Mr. Marajan for the first time. He was very pleasant and professional asking what he could do for me. I told him I wanted to 'get rid of this' grabbing hold of my stomach flab! He examined me and took some pictures before explaining what procedure I needed. Basically, I needed a full tummy tuck and liposuction pricing at £6400 plus £100 consultation fee! He went through all the possible risks although if I'm really honest I wasn't really listening as I was so thrilled and shocked he'd said he would do the operation! At that moment in time, it didn't matter what the risks were I wanted it done! A little stupid but when you've waited and dreamed of having it done for so long all you can think of is it's happening, I'm finally going to get a flat stomach. Something which I've never ever had in my life before! So we set a date for 8th July 2017, less than 6 weeks to go! I could have had it done sooner but wanted to tie my operation in with the summer holidays. As the weeks went by I couldn't imagine what I was going to look like except better than I did! I'd be excited one minute and then paralyzed with fear the next, what was I doing? Why didn't I just book a cruise and just live with how I was? After all, my husband of 25 years loved me just the way I was! The thing was I wasn't doing it for him I was doing it for myself. I sucked it up and counted down the days. The night before my operation I couldn't sleep as I kept thinking about all the things that could happen both good and bad. I'd already had a conversation with my sister about my finances and funeral should I not pull through! Finally, morning came and I was on my way to the hospital with my mind all over the place. When I arrived I was taken to the ward by a nurse where I was settled into my room before I saw Mr. Marajan and the anesthetist in preparation for my procedure. I had been asked to arrive at 7 am and by 8.30 am I was on my way to the theatre! I was asked to lay in a trolley where I was given a cocktail of drugs before being put to sleep. My final thought was "there's no going back now". I've survived! Was my first thought when I came round quickly followed by 'I'm going to be sick!' Which I was, I can remember being aware of people around me and looking after me while I was in recovery before being moved back to my room, where I drifted in and out of sleep for several hours. I remember my husband coming to see me but sent him away as I wasn't up to talking. I just wanted to sleep! I had been told my operation would take about 3 to 4 hours but I wasn't back in my room at 4.30pm that's 8 hours I was away from my room! When I finally came round enough to notice what was going on I felt terrible. I wasn't in any pain as such but felt stiff and sickly due to a number of drugs I'd been given! I seemed to fall into a pattern of 20 minutes sleeping than 10 minutes awake. I was aware of people coming to check on me and talking to them but as soon as they left I was asleep in no time! Because I felt so rough I did wonder what the hell I'd done to myself! One of the nurses asked me if I'd had a look at my scar, I said no, I was too scared to look! I could tell from how the blankets fell on my bed that my stomach was a lot flatter than it had been 24 hours ago, but didn't want to venture any further than that! She said she had looked and said it looked fantastic and she knew I was feeling rubbish but I wouldn't regret my decision! By 12 pm the following day I was feeling a little better, I wasn't able to eat any breakfast so hadn't eaten anything since about 9 pm on Friday, two days before so was looking forward to my dinner! I had been checked over by Mr. Marajan who told me he had taken a total of 7.5kg from my stomach, that's 16.5lbs for those of you in old money! Over a stone I had lost in the last 24 hours. I had a bed, bath, clean pajamas and been refitted for a compression garment as the one I had been put in during surgery was miles too big! I'd managed to look at my new stomach and oh my goodness, it's flat! Is all I could say! It did feel weird having never had a flat stomach ever before! I managed to eat a little but the cocktail of drugs made me feel sickly although I wasn't actually sick, which is worse don't you think?! My family came to see me curious to see the results and make sure I was still alive! My youngest who's 21 didn't want me to have the operation and was a little worried I wouldn't make it! I was in the hospital for a total of 4 nights, being given the very best possible care. Nothing was too much trouble, everyone had time to talk to me and answer any questions I had. My room was cleaned regularly as was my en suite, I just rested and watch Wimbledon the whole time I was there! My only complaint was that due to me feeling sickly I wasn't able to eat much of the fabulous food they kept bringing me! I was given a proper menu and told if I fancied something I could have it. Overall the treatment was fabulous and the team the best.
