Many individuals find stretch marks unsightly and would like to have something done to improve their appearance. The Dermapen™ offers an effective solution to this problem. This 30-minute treatment employs the use of micro-medical skin needling to create columns that are approximately 0.1mm in width to penetrate the skin dermis and thus allow the body to regenerate naturally and repair the skin, working in the dermis, thereby tackling the problem at its roots. Skin needling is a safe and precise procedure that does not require the removal of healthy epidermis which means that it offers a rapid healing time and does not cause any comparable pain. The procedure produces collagen layers on a scale similar to laser therapies. Types of Stretch Mark TreatmentsSkin needling using the Dermapen™ is one of the most effective available treatments for stretch marks. After an initial consultation with your practitioner, if it is agreed that you will benefit from the Dermapen™ Therapy, local anaesthetic is applied to the affected area in order to numb it; the anaesthetic is then allowed to work over the course of 30 minutes. The actual dermapen procedure takes 20-30 minutes and is virtually painless.Following the treatment, a soothing cream is applied and should continue to be applied at home for the next couple of days. For the first 24 hours post-procedure, the affected area will look red and may be slightly swollen (very similar to the appearance of mild sunburn). This is the normal expected result and is not painful. Although significant results are often seen following the first treatment, your practitioner will generally recommend between three and five treatments for optimum and long-lasting effects. This treatment is contra-indicated in the presence of active acne and if there is a tendency to form hypertrophic or keloid scars.

How does it work? The concept behind needling is the stimulation of new collagen production in your skin. The needle breaks the skin and causes micro-trauma and micro-inflammation. Your body responds by sending blood to the area for healing. As your skin repairs itself, new collagen builds up just below the surface. The wrinkles, lines, or depressed scars plump from the bottom-up without the use of anything artificial. Repeated needling sessions gradually and continually build new collagen to fill-in the treated areas. The gentle stimulus provided by Micro Needling is far more “skin friendly” and thus far more effective than many other more invasive and more expensive skin treatments. Micro-channels seal within hours after application: long enough for new collagen-structures to form within the lower layers of the skin and short enough to allow you to resume normal schedules quickly. This appears to be the end of the story. But it isn’t. Underneath the skin’s surface, much more is going on. In fact, the healing response which begins immediately upon the injury kick-starts a healing process that last for several months, and up to a year. This natural healing process is where all the magic happens. Deeper needle penetrations into the dermis produces better collagen and elastin production. The breaking of blood vessels is also key to starting the 12-month healing and reorganising phase. If the needle only pokes the topmost skin layer and does not reach the dermis, there may be some improvements but no dramatic results. For optimum results in depressed acne scarring, surgical scars, severe pigmentation, stretch marks, and cellulite, it is recommended to have the deeper treatments done at a clinic with a trained professional.
