What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins, also known as varicosities, are thick and dark blue or purple veins that are seen in the lower limbs of patients. They are caused by damaged or poorly functioning valves within the veins. Surgical and nonsurgical procedures are used to treat varicose veins.

How are Varicose Veins treated?

Varicose veins are treated by making patients wear compression stockings, by helping them to lose weight, by sclerotherapy, injecting  a chemical into the vein to make it collapse, laser and radiofrequency assisted procedures, phlebectomy procedures, where veins are removed by making small cuts on the surface of the skin and by surgical procedures involving tying or stripping of the varicose veins.

Are Varicose Vein treatments painful?

Minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins are performed after administering local anaesthetic to the treatment area. Surgical varicose vein removal procedures are performed under general anaesthesia. Patients will not feel any pain during the procedures.

When will I recover after Varicose Veins treatments?

It takes about five weeks to completely recover from minimally invasive and surgical varicose vein treatments.

What care is required after Varicose Vein treatments?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should wear compression stockings to prevent blood clots. They should not wear tight clothing or high heeled shoes. They should elevate their legs while sitting. They should not smoke or drink alcohol. They should not gain weight after varicose vein treatments. They should avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least two weeks.

Plymouth Vein Clinic - Medical Aesthetics Clinic in the UK

Plymouth Vein Clinic

Nuffield Health, Plymouth Hospital, Derriford Road, Plymouth, PL6 8BG
The Plymouth Vein Clinic Specialist treatment of varicose veins and thread veins The Plymouth Vein Clinic is based at the Nuffield Health Plymouth Hospital and offers "state of the art" clinic facilities for private patients. The clinic is situated just north of the city and easily accessible by road for patients living in Devon and Cornwall or elsewhere in the South West. We are dedicated to the treatment of varicose veins and thread veins using the latest minimally invasive techniques. Most varicose veins treatments are literally "walk-in, walk-out" with little, if any, discomfort. We treat all types of varicose veins problems whether it is purely for cosmetic reasons or more severe symptoms or complications including chronic venous insufficiency causing skin problems or leg ulceration. Initially, a detailed assessment of your varicose veins or thread veins will be made by consultation and physical examination. This will be followed by hand-held Doppler assessment (a very basic ultrasound test) and in most cases, a colour venous duplex scan (a detailed vascular ultrasound test) will be arranged before making a final decision regarding the optimal treatment. The latter is an essential component of the management of most patients with varicose veins in order to clarify the venous anatomy and sites of venous incompetence (leaky valves in the veins) as well as to check on the integrity of the deeper veins before embarking on any treatment.
