Prof Nadey S Hakim

KCJSJ, MD, PhD, FRCS, FRCSI, FACS, FICS

Professor Hakim is a General Bariatric and Transplant Surgeon. He is the Surgical Director of the West London Transplant Unit based at the Hammersmith Hospital. He has a particular interest and expertise in kidney and pancreas transplantation. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons. He obtained his MD from Paris Rene Descartes University; he received his surgical training at Guy’s Hospital in London and PhD in small bowel transplantation from University College London. He completed a Gastrointestinal Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic and Multiorgan Transplant Fellowship at the University of Minnesota.

To date he has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and has written/edited 18 textbooks in the field of General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery and Transplantation. He is the Editor in Chief of International Surgery, a prestigious peer-reviewed journal and is on the Editorial Board of Transplant Proceedings, Graft, Experimental and Clinical Transplantation and of several other journals.

He is a member of the Kidney-Pancreas Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTP) and Past President of the Transplantation Section of the Royal Society for Medicine.

He has been awarded an Honorary Professorship of the University of Sao Paolo, University of Lyon, University of Lima, Peru and University of Beshkent Ankara. He has been a visiting Professor at several prestigious centres including Harvard University.

He is the 35th World President of the International College of Surgeons, based in Chicago. Prior to his election he served as First Vice President and European Federation Secretary of this College.

He has recently been awarded the 2007 J Wesley Alexander Prize for outstanding research in the field of Transplantation.

Mr Shamsi El-Hasani

Biography:
Mr El-Hasani has specialised for 32 years in upper gastrointestinal, gall bladder and weight loss surgery. Most of his work involves the use of laparoscopic (key hole) surgery. So far he has performed 1500 laparoscopic Gastric Bands, 600 laparoscopic Gastric Bypasses, and 195 endoscopic insertions of Gastric Balloon. He also regularly performs laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomies, and accepts the management of revisional bariatric surgery. Mr El-Hasani is closely involved in the surgical management of type 2 diabetes and he has recent international publication in this field. He is a member of the following associations: Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons British Bariatric Surgical Society International Federation of Surgery for Obesity Mr El-Hasani provides the Gastric Balloon, Gastric Band, MGB Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve, and Gastric Plication procedures.

Mr Yashwant Koak

Biography:
Mr Koak is a Consultant General, Laparoscopic, Bariatric and Upper GI Surgeon who has performed in excess of 5000 operations. Mr Koak qualified in medicine from the University of Glasgow and did his Basic Surgical training at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He then joined the Royal Free Hospital to complete his Master of Surgery at the University of London. His Specialist Registrar training was in the North (East) London Deanery. After his CCST he spent a year as a Senior Clinical Fellow at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia, where he specialised in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery. After his fellowship he worked as a GI surgeon at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, Cambridgeshire. During this time he also trained as a Medical Hypnotherapist. Mr Koak is a Consultant Bariatric and Upper GI Surgeon at Homerton University Hospital where the Bariatric Surgical Unit serves one of the largest numbers of patients in the UK. Mr Koak performs the Gastric Band and Gastric Sleeve for the National Obesity Surgery Centre.
