What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Golden Smile Dental Office

123/19 Nghia Phat Ward 6, Tanbinh District, Ho Chi Minh
Rating from 36 Reviews The doctor is friendly, smart and professionalStephen, Vietnam, 28 Apr 18

My wife is Vietnamese and since I needed a root canal/crown and we would be in Asia, I decided to give Dr. Tuyen a try. I have never had a root canal (#30 molar) before so I didn’t know what to expect. Dr. Tuyen sent a car to my hotel to take me to the clinic. She reassured me and even though my root canal was a tricky one, she was able to get me through the procedure. I came back a few times because I had a swollen nerve that needed special treatment. She did the root canal before I went for a 10 day trip to central Vietnam. When I returned, she filled my root canal and then took impressions. I returned the next day for the crown. The service was fantastic and the price compared to the US wasn’t even close. There are three levels of crown: 3/5/7 million vnd. I went with the middle priced crown. I highly recommend her service to anyone needing dental work:). I am planning to get more work done when I return in December. The experience was great (considering what I was doing)! Dr. Tuyen is friendly, smart and professional.

Rating from 1 Review I am very happy with my teeth now.Duyen, Ho Chi Minh, 14 Sep 15

My tooth color is very dark, and I want to have teeth whitening. My friend recommends Lan Anh Dental Clinic for me, and I got twenty ceramic crowns in 130 Ha Huy Tap Street- District 7 with Dr. Duy. He is a specialist about dental crown, and he is a very careful man. I am very happy with my teeth now. My friends say my teeth are a sample for anyone. I know many people have already asked me for your details, and hopefully they will come to get their teeth done. Thank you very much!

Rating from 59 Reviews very satisfied with the work and would highly recommend this clinicAndy, New Zealand, 24 Jun 16

I had two root canals, fillings and a dental plate done at the clinic. All this was done for under $600 NZ. I am very satisfied with the work and would highly recommend this clinic. Very friendly and professional staff, especially I would highly recommend Dr. Han and the nurse who was helping her on the day of my treatment.

Treatment of the highest qualityMatthew, New Zealand, 11 Jul 15

I thought I required 2 fillings but the check up revealed 6 fillings, 2 crowns and a root canal !!! The diagnostic equipment used appeared to be very sophisticated and I so agreed to have the required work done. This work was then carried out. I was very happy with the treatment. The equipment was world class and the treatment seemed to be of highest quality. The facilities were of a very high standard. The staff were friendly and the dentist seemed to be highly competent.

Dr. Hung & Associates Dental Center

244A Cong Quynh Street, Pham Ngu Lao Ward, District 1, HCMC, Ho Chi Minh City
Rating from 262 Reviews It was a really enjoyable experience, yes, at a dentistPeter, Australia, 14 Sep 17

2 x CT 3D cone beam Xrays before and after, 5 RCT, 4 endodontic, 1 calcified under a 5-year-old crown, 1 apicoectomy, 6 implants and at this stage 15 Zirconia crown/bridges and 1-night mouthguard. Implants to be crowned in 3 months. Over the past 10 years (actually from when I was 8, I am now 60), I was spending too much time at the dentist in Australia with drill, fill, remove, crown. As a child I remember seeing them prepare mercury amalgam on a dish beside me. I already had 5 crowns/bridges so I was trying to save what was left. It was obvious a loosing battle was being fought as over time more teeth were being removed. I had 6 missing teeth, mostly molars, with almost non-functional chewing. I had only 2 opposing molars left and they started to fail with serious toothaches, large fillings and attempted RCT. The dentist wanted to remove both. It was the beginning of the end. Something dramatic had to be done. Based on my OPG I requested a referral for endodontic work on 3 teeth. I had already undergone 4 such procedures. This would mean many overnight trips to Canberra as I am from the Bega. The quote was $4000 per RCT without adding the cost of the crowns, traveling and overnight accommodation. I considered this cost to be nothing but obscene. I considered implants locally. They were $6000 each. Hmm, my dental holiday plan was commenced. I knew of friends who had successful dental work in Vietnam and other nearby countries. Vietnam was my country of choice so I contacted a couple of dentists in HCMC with identical emails. I chose Dr. Hung as he responded the best to my initial inquiries and he had the most comprehensive website. I started off along the lines of what minimal work could be undertaken and the initial quotes were such that they would fit my budget with crowns and bridges. As the emails continued I then asked for their professional opinion on the best option. It was for implants and crowns. I was confident in their proposal. It was less than the endodontic and crowns in Canberra with a holiday thrown in. The reason I chose such comprehensive work was that you cannot take the money with you and I wanted to be able to chew, a skill I had forgotten. Aesthetics were not a concern but rather a function. It was a really enjoyable experience, yes, at a dentist. I enjoyed seeing my teeth being repaired and shaped for crowns. I enjoyed the operating theatre for the implants and apicoectomy. I enjoyed the endodontic root canals. I only had one painkiller (discomfort in fitting some crowns) other than those specified for operations. It was completed quickly with many procedures at one time avoiding dozens of trips if attempted locally. The bonus of Dr. Hung was the collection and return to the airport and accommodation, the comfortable surrounds, the wifi, the engineering equipment, the staff working as a team, the in-house fabrication of teeth and guides and HCMC. My wife also had major dental work but it was my teeth that astounded my daughter as all she knew had been chipped and discolored. So here we are, back in Bega, reminiscing and yes it was worth the effort and I have no reservation in recommending Dr. Hungs Dental Surgery in HCMC.

Platinum Dental Group

Rating from 36 Reviews Friendly staff and experienced doctors.Elisabeth, Singapore, 20 Jan 17

Clinic is very modern and nice design. Facilities were clean and friendly staff and experienced doctors.

I am completely pain-free & will now have a full set of teethRay, Sydney, 23 Mar 18

Initially, I was incredibly nervous about having surgery overseas. Australian dentists were absolutely scathing of anything overseas, but the Australian costs were ridiculously prohibitive. In truth, I had also had my fair share of some pretty miserable Australian dentists, so I was open to consider an overseas option. In a recent October 2017 holiday visit to Ho Chi Minh, My wife and I met an Australian couple, over a hotel breakfast in Nha Trang, who had already, researched extensively, dental work worldwide. The husband had been offered dental work in Australia for $75000 - $90000AUD. He was extremely motivated to find a more satisfactory solution. In their research, they struggled to abide the hype around Thailand “Tourist” surgery and through continual research, at last, found the genuine and relaxed professionalism of Anna and her Platinum dental surgery, here in Vietnam. We were lucky to initially meet them, during their surgery recovery, the initial results were certainly impressive, but since returning to Australia and now five months later, their total dental experience has been a complete and overwhelming success – With competence, care, patience and skill their Vietnamese dental work had gone as smooth as silk, and five months later everything had healed and the new teeth were comfortable and working as promised. We were impressed and decided to take the Platinum dental plunge. We were lucky and already had had an initial consultation with Anna in her office in Ho Chi Minh, in Oct 2017, introduced by our new friends. We were X-rayed, examined (had a broken filling replaced, $36AUD) a complete quotation was prepared and we were given a complete tour of her dental facilities, prior to leaving her building. Other than the tooth repair there were no charges. Anna recommended 4 implants, 1 tooth extraction, 2 sinus lifts and potentially 3 bone grafts. All of this was to be completed in her state of the art surgery building. This diagnosis was, unbeknown to Anna, almost a complete copy of my Australian dentist. My Australian quotation (not guaranteed as the total) was already over $35000AUD, Anna’s Vietnam quotation was $6721AUD. After our friend's experience, I, with trepidation but growing trust in Dr. Anna, I agreed to undertake the surgery. We traveled to Vietnam in March 2018 (Ho Chi Minh) 8.5 hours from Australia. Caught a cab to Platinum Dental, to stay in their accommodation, housed above the surgeries. My first day was 3D X-rays and final consulting, the following day was my surgery. The total of my dental works were completed in one 3 hour surgery, I was sedated and literally felt nothing. I was released to my room, suffering nothing more than a mild headache. I was stunned. I stayed on Panadol for the evening and went to sleep, actually having a restful night. The next day I actually forgot to start my day with Panadol, but to be careful, I started Panadol about 10 am. I found I could eat, my gums were tender, so I stayed with Pho and other softer dishes for the day, Stayed off Ban Mi (Crunchy Pork rolls) for 2 days, haha! But I really felt amazingly well. In our convalescence time, my wife and I walked and traveled so many of Ho Chi Minh streets and interesting sites. Most people fly in and out of Ho Chi Minh and have no time to appreciate it, but my convalescence time of one full week really opened to me a wonderful warmth and sincerity to this vibrant city. (If you want to know more about Ho Chi Minh, the city, follow my “TripAdvisor” reviews). Overall my Vietnam surgery and Ho Chi Minh experience have been so life changing for me. After 35 years with missing or fragile teeth, constant dental pain and expense, I am completely pain-free & will now have a full set of teeth! I cried, sincerely cried when I met with Anna after my surgery, everything felt so good, I am sure her work and care will change my life. I am so glad I made the effort to visit Anna and her Platinum Dental Clinic.

Rating from 3 Reviews Really happy with the result.Kathy, Melbourne, 28 Jun 15

I had my teeth cleaned and whitened. The dentist was very thorough. The teeth whitening is quite painful after a while but even so, I am really happy with the result. The staff members are very supportive. I would recommend this clinic to others. Clinic was very neat and clean and great service and quite cheap! I was very happy. The staff were all very caring and friendly and I would recommend this clinic to others staying in Saigon. It was quite close to our hotel as well.

Couldn't be happierCanice, Australia, 21 Mar 17

I hadn't been to a dentist in about 10 years, my teeth were falling out. Now i have a full set of crowns. Couldn't be happier The dentist and his assistants were so caring, very professional and would have to be the first time that I have had a good experience at the dentist. Very modern and laid back surgery.

Rating from 65 Reviews Very professional service during my Root Canal TreatmentWilliam, Vietnam, 06 Sep 16

The treatment that I had was a for a root canal, not a pleasant experience but a necessary requirement. This took four visits to the dentist, a Miss Tien who was extremely professional with the treatment and explained on each visit what was going to happen, which for a guy like myself helps because I dread the visit`s to the dentist. I may add that all the staff are very helpful and polite. The best dentist that I know in Saigon and would recommend to all my friends and colleagues.. Value-- A good question how much value do you put on your teeth and your smile.. Started with this clinic when it was run and owned by Dr Andrew H.F.Tsang which through is excellent knowledge and care just kept me coming back--Lovely guy. my visits each time are always are met with the same excellent service as if Dr. Andrew was still there..
