Tooth extraction, bone loss and use of removable appliances for a long period time often lead to a decrease in bone volume which makes it impossible to position dental implants in such a way that they can optimally support a dental prosthesis. Alveolar bone defects/deficiencies can be prevented and overcome by surgical placement of bone graft.

Bone has a unique capacity to regenerate itself completely. Bone graft materials are used to facilitate bone formation within a given space by occupying that space and allowing bone growth to take place. They help maintain space under a barrier membrane for bone formation to occur.

Goals of bone graft placement include:

  • Restoration of bone ridge contour in the area of a missing tooth
  • Correction/elimination of ridge defects
  • Reduce postoperative infection, enhancing bone and soft tissue healing

What is tooth extraction?

Dental extraction, commonly referred to as tooth extraction, is the removal of teeth from the tooth socket. It is the treatment of choice when the tooth is already beyond repair and is infected or when the tooth is extremely mobile due to periodontal disease.

Tooth extraction is also known as an uncomplicated extraction.

This is performed on teeth that are clinically visible in the oral cavity. The procedure starts with the administration of local anesthesia.

Upon numbing of the tooth and surrounding structures, the gums are detached from the tooth using a hand instrument called a gum separator. This is to facilitate the access of the next set of hand instruments called elevators.

It is a common misconception that when dentists extract the tooth, they pull it out forcefully; however, this is not the case. Dentists use elevators to raise and wiggle the tooth out of the socket using small, controlled movements. When the tooth is already mobile in the socket, the tooth is picked up using the forceps.

Immediately after the tooth extraction, the socket is scraped with a small spoon-shaped instrument to make sure that no debris or diseased tissues remain inside. The tooth socket is also flushed with sterile saline solution to guarantee its cleanliness. Slight pressure is then applied to the socket to stop the bleeding usually by biting on a small piece of gauze for 30 minutes.

To ensure proper healing after the extraction, it is also advisable to rest for at least 24 hours, therefore avoiding any strenuous activities. Sucking, such as using a straw or puffing a cigarette, should be avoided because the negative pressure can stimulate bleeding. There is a long list of dos and don’ts after tooth extraction and it is best to follow your dentist’s instructions to avoid further complications.

Third molars or wisdom teeth are the last set of teeth to erupt. They are called wisdom teeth because they emerge at a more mature age, either in your late teens or early twenties.  Most adults have four wisdom teeth, one in each of the four quadrants. When will you need a root canal?

“Root canal” refers to the natural cavity inside your tooth that contains the soft dental pulp that is made up of nerves and blood vessels. The dental pulp can be damaged by:

·  extensive tooth decay

·  repeated dental procedures on the tooth

·  large fillings

·  crack or chip in the tooth

·  trauma

When the pulp is damaged, it decays and becomes infested with bacteria. The tooth becomes infected and abscess or pus forms at the end of the roots. The abscessed tooth can cause pain and swelling that may spread to the other areas of your head and neck. If left untreated, an abscessed tooth can cause other serious dental problems.

What is a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment or endodontic therapy is a procedure that removes the infected, injured or dead pulp and nerves from your tooth.

The pulp and nerves of the tooth are not vital. Once your tooth fully develops and emerges from the gum line, the function of the pulp and nerves of your tooth becomes limited to providing you sensations of heat and cold. Removing the pulp and nerves will not affect the functioning of the tooth.

After the pulp and nerves are removed, the tooth is cleaned, disinfected and filled. A root canal treated tooth should be restored with a crown to protect the tooth, prevent it from breaking and restore its function.

Teeth Cleaning

Teeth Cleaning

A procedure done for the teeth cleaning. It removes tartar and plaque build-up from the surfaces of the teeth as well as those hidden in between and under the gums. The dentist uses a scaler, a type of hand instrument, to remove the plaque and tartar.

Procedure

The denture making process takes a few weeks and several appointments. Once your dentist determines what type and design of denture is best for you, the treatment starts with a series of impressions of the upper and lower jaw, registration of the bite, and facial measurements.

Models of your teeth are made to subsequently form the shape and position of the future denture using wax. Several trial fittings will be done with this model and the denture will be assessed for the color of the artificial teeth, shape, and fit before the final denture is processed.

Adjustments will be made as necessary for every step of the treatment.

Post Treatment

Dental visit every year to check and examine the adaptation of the denture to the oral mucosa.

Clean the dentures properly by brushing it with soap or denture cleansers to remove foul odor.

Laser Teeth Whitening

IN-OFFICE WHITENING

In-office whitening involves the careful and controlled application of a relatively high-concentration peroxide gel (15% to 43% peroxide) on your teeth at 15-20 minute intervals. The peroxide is activated using a special light that intensifies and speeds up the whitening process. The entire process can last up to 2 hours.

Having your teeth whitened by a dentist at the clinic ensures that the entire procedure will be safely and correctly performed.

Before the procedure, the dentist ensures that your oral tissues will be adequately protected during the entire whitening process. A special cheek retractor is used to open your mouth and protect your lips. A special gingival barrier will also be cured onto your gums to protect it from the peroxide solution and from the light. During the entire process, a high vacuum suction will be used to reduce accidental ingestion of the whitening solution.

In-office whitening can produce dramatic results. Whitening can be achieved faster and results can be seen immediately after the appointment. Results vary from person to person. Usually, teeth will be 2 to 8 shades lighter after the procedure.

Patients with stubborn staining may be advised to return for one or more additional bleaching sessions or may be asked to continue with a take-home whitening system.
