What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

I paid the online price and the dentist was clear about the aftercareJamille, Ireland, 19 02 18

I chose Ballsbridge for my root canal because the reviews from other clients were good. The work done was alright for the money I paid. I didn’t feel a lot of pain, and this is always an important factor. The dentist was good and he explained the procedure and treatments thoroughly. One of the receptionists were very accommodating. I paid the online price and the dentist was clear about the aftercare. He was good with calling to remind me of follow-ups.

I have never been treated by a dentist who was more passionate about what they do.Robert, Ireland, 30 07 16

A few months ago, a piece of one of a molar tooth which had been filled previously when I was a teenager broke off. I didn't visit the dentist before because I have a fear of needles and not good when it comes to pain. I was pushed into getting it looked at, and I am glad I was in the end. I looked at a selection of dentists online and finally selected MyDental. I explained I was nervous about the dentist visit when I booked the consultation. I was seen by Dr. Paula Taracido. I must say she was excellent; she explained what was wrong and the treatment required. A quotation for the treatments was sent confirming the prices of each part of the treatment and the discounts offered which were very good. On accepting this treatment plan, I was given a follow-up appointment within a couple of days. Given my nervousness, Paula was very reassuring and gently applied the injections with much less pain than I have experienced in the past. I had the old amalgam filling replaced with a new white filling which now looks like a completely new tooth. I also elected to have an upper wisdom tooth removed which took some more injections; again, not painful. It did take quite an effort to extract. Again, Paula was excellent. I have never been treated by a dentist who was more passionate about what they do and making sure the patient was looked after and comfortable during the treatment. Thanks, Paula.

I was delighted with the resultMs, Ireland, 12 11 20

I was referred to Dr Cleary about a decade ago for a repeat root canal on a back tooth, which had been inexpertly done the year before. I was referred by my then retired dentist (who hadn't performed the faulty original root canal), who recommended Dr Cleary very highly. I was treated in a most professional manner, and the level of skill he possessed, along with state of the art equipment, was astounding. I was delighted with the result, and ten years on, a recent dental x-ray I had taken was singled out by my current dentist for the excellence of that particular root canal. I highly recommend Dr Patrick Cleary for his exceptional work. Many thanks for saving my tooth.

Root canals
This is basically a deeper filling where the root of the tooth is filled as well as the crown. Your dentist opens up the root canal or space in the centre of the tooth. This space is cleaned and washed out using small instruments called files. It is then filled with a rubber based filling material called gutta-percha followed by a temporary filling.
