These orthodontic appliances are used mainly in childhood misalignments to redirect the growth of the jaw bones (maxilla and mandible) as well as the teeth. These appliances have to be worn during the night and daytime as long as possible. Advantages: we can influence the development of the bones of the jaw, removable by the patient, easy to brush the teeth and keep the appliance clean, and lower price for the treatment. Disadvantages: extreme movement of the teeth is not possible with this treatment, and the effectiveness is dependent on the on the patient's compliance: the longer they use it per day, the more effective it is.

These are permanent as the brackets that hold the wire are glued to the front of the teeth. These brackets can be made from different materials. Metal brackets (stainless steel, titanium, gold) are esthetically less desirable. Or they can be tooth-colored, made from plastic or porcelain. In some cases, brackets may be put on the back of the teeth (lingual appliances). These braces will apply a constant, controlled force to the teeth that moves the teeth into the desired direction over time. This continuous force will rebuild the bones, too: bone will be destroyed at the site of pressure and built at the site of pulling. In the case of the permanent braces, posterior rings are placed on the last four teeth and brackets are placed on each tooth. These brackets hold a wire. The wire will apply force to the teeth. Advantages: Constant and controlled but gentle force is applied to the teeth; continuous treatment. Disadvantages: As it is glued to the teeth, only an orthodontist can remove it, so it is much harder to keep the appliance or teeth clean; more expensive than the removable braces.
