After extensive research into skin damage caused by the sun and ageing, Dr Des Fernandes, a renowned South African plastic surgeon, member of the IIAA and the founder of the Environ skin care company, was amongst the first pioneers to study and develop the technique of skin needling. Using a dry tattoo needle he discovered that this method of puncturing the upper layers of the skin has an ability to reduce scarring, and lessen the depth of wrinkles by stimulating the skin's own ability to produce collagen and elastin. He went on to design an instrument that could be used by anyone, anywhere and would safely puncture the horny layer of the skin only. This instrument in the form of a small hand held roller, has multi 0.2 mm long 'needles' and is known as the Environ Cosmetic Roll-Cit .
