Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a condition where patients sweat profusely for no reason.  Patients either sweat excessively in their hands, underarms, forehead, feet or, in extreme cases, all over their body.

Excessive sweating is caused by age, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, illness or certain medications.

How is Excessive Sweating treated?

Excessive sweating is treated by oral medications, electromagnetic impulses, neuro-muscular relaxant injections, laser assisted treatments and by surgical procedures, including liposuction and endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) surgery.

Are Excessive Sweating treatments painful?

Patients will feel injection pain with injectable treatments.  Laser treatments are performed after administering local anaesthetic and patients do not feel pain during the procedure. Surgical procedures are performed under general anaesthesia and patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

When will I recover after an Excessive Sweating treatment?

Patients will recover two days after laser or injectable procedures. It will take about a week for patients to recover from surgical procedures to treat excessive sweating.

What care is required after an Excessive Sweating treatment?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least a month.  Patients should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least a month.

I've just recently (May 2026) had 2 large moles removed - one from my back, the other from my left cheek - both by laser. As I was a bit nervous, I had the one on my back lasered first. It was fast and painless, and went as easy as pie! Therefore, I had the mole on my cheek lasered 6 days later. The area on my back took 2 weeks for the skin to heal (i.e. before the scab disappeared), as it was slightly bigger; the area on my cheek was shorter, at 10 days. The results are incredible, and I couldn't be more pleased! Although I was nervous to start with, Dr. Stephen and his lady assistant both made me feel comfortable and at ease. They are both well-experienced, and Dr. Stephen "really knows his stuff", as he's had 20+ years of doing this. Thank you so much! 🙏🏽

Excessive sweating can be annoying in two ways.The sweat may show on your clothes (for example at the armpits) or give you embarrassingly sweaty palms.You may be worried about the smell of the sweat. Sweat from most of the sweat glands (i.e. the eccrine glands) is not smelly itself (except the pheromones, which are so subtle that we are not consciously aware of smelling them), but it quickly becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. These bacteria break down sweat to produce fatty acids. It is these fatty acids that have the acrid, penetrating, pungent, ‘stale sweat’ smell. Arm and groin sweat is particularly rich in protein – a favourite of bacteria. Sweat from other parts of the body is saltier and less hospitable to bacteria. This problem can be approached in two ways: sweating itself can be prevented; or the bacteria that cause the smell can be attacked.
