Traditional acupuncture treats the whole person, body and mind, and not just symptoms. Its been researched, refined and developed for centuries. Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world.

Susannah Fone BSc (Hons) Lic Ac, MBAcCSusannah trained at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading. The college is a centre of excellence for the teaching of Chinese Medicine in the UK and offers degree level courses accredited by Kingston University. She has also completed further training in treating infertility and using acupuncture during IVF as well as Obstetric Acupuncture with Debra Betts. Susannah is a member of the Oxfordshire Acupuncture for Childbirth Team and an affiliate member of the Zita West Network.

Non-traditional acupuncture or medical dry needling reinterprets the traditional apparatus of "meridians" and "points" and is based on the modern understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology. In many cases dry needling is used on "trigger points" in muscles, these are tender points within muscles which cause pain when pressed and radiate pain to other areas. Needling the trigger points can relieve pain in these distant areas. Acupuncture can still work even when there are no trigger points. In such cases it is thought it acts by changing the ways in which the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) is transmitting information about pain. If considered suitable by your practitioner, medical dry needling can be used to treat different forms of pain, particularly pain in the muscles and joints. It has also been found to help in a range of other disorders, including headaches and migraines, painful periods and ulcerative colitis.

Sports massage tends to be a deeper more intense massage, combining a variety of techniques including stretching, friction and trigger point release. With sports massage it's especially important to have a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology. By understanding these systems and the effects of exercise, we are able to develop a clearer picture of why the individual may be suffering in particular areas, which allows us to tailor our massage treatment.

It is suitable for almost anyone and can contribute to the treatment and management of a wide range of conditions. Osteopaths primarily work through the neuro-musculo-skeletal system, mostly treating muscles and joints, using holistic and patient-centred approaches.
