LASEK (laser-assisted epithelial keratomileusis) is a surface treatment that avoids the need to create a corneal flap. The total treatment takes around 10 minutes per eye. It works by softening the thin upper layer of the cornea (1), called the epithelium, before moving it aside (3). An excimer laser (4) is then applied to the exposed tissue before the thin layer is put back in its original position (5). A special contact lens is then applied to protect the epithelium while it heals (6). Every individual is different. ILASIK LASIK is the most common technique, this is mainly due to its faster healing times. A flap made from two layers of corneal tissue forms a natural protection around the eye during the recovery period. Most patients see instant results and return to work the next day
