While traveling in Malaysia, I experienced the symptoms of a retinal tear (floaters and flashes of light in my vision), having had the same problem last summer. The treatment is a repair of the tear through laser surgery if the tear is not too big (laser surgery sounds worse than it is, but there is no pain at all). If the tear is too big, a different surgery called a vitrectomy is required.
