What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, also called dental laminates, that are used to cover unsightly teeth and give patients attractive smiles. They are easy to place and can quickly improve the smile of patients with dental cracks and stains, and for patients who have gaps between their teeth.

What is the difference between Veneers and Dental Crowns?

Veneers cover only the front portion of teeth. Crowns cover or replace the entire tooth. Crowns are therefore thicker than veneers. A major portion of the tooth needs to be reduced before placing a crown while only a small portion of the tooth needs to be reduced before placing a veneer. A crown is used for covering damaged teeth and is also placed over a dental implant. A veneer is only used for cosmetic purposes.

What are the best types of Veneers?

The best type of veneer depends on the needs of each individual patient. Some veneers can be easily placed without much tooth preparation. Some veneers are suitable for severely damaged teeth. Some veneers can be easily made in the clinic and patients do not have to wait long for their placement. Some veneers are cheaper than others and are suitable for patients looking for a low cost option.  Your dentist should discuss the options with you so you can make the best choice.

How long before you can eat after getting Veneers?

Dentists recommend that patients eat only soft foods after veneers are placed, and for the first few days, until they get used to them. Veneers are normally bonded firmly to teeth and patients can eat any type of food.

What are Veneers made from?

Veneers are made from ceramic, composite resins or zirconium.

A huge thank you to the dentist from me and my new wife for saving my smile on our wedding dayDeclan, UK, 15 03 22

Apologies for the long story, but it's a worthwhile read. At 9AM on Sunday 13th March I was due to jump in the car and drive down to get married after a 2 year COVID induced delay. At 4AM that morning a loud crack at my mouth woke me up, and to my horror I realised my bridge had fallen out and I now had a tooth sized gap in my smile. At 7AM, after 3 rather stressful hours I called the emergency number on Amsel & Wilkins answering machine which was immediately answered by Nigel. After explaining my emergency, Nigel told me to meet him at 8AM and he'd fix me right up. Nigel opened up the practice just for me, on a Sunday morning, and by 8.45AM I was walking back up Banbury High Street relaxed and stress-free (well as stress-free as you can be before your wedding) with all my teeth in my mouth - rather than in my pocket. By 4.30PM I was tucking into pork belly and crackling like nothing had happened. A huge thank you to Nigel from me and my new wife for saving my smile on our wedding day, as well as from our photographer who you saved from many, many hours of photoshop. Finally, my bestwoman thanks you for the additional story for her speech, one that received plenty of gasps and laughter. From a very appreciative patient for life.

Veneers and crowns can be used to improve the appearance, shape and colour of teeth. They can be made from a variety of materials including porcelain and composite. They can be carried out alone or complemented with tooth alignment and whitening. They can be solution to provide you with the smile you’ve always dreamed of and can take as little as 2 weeks to complete. Cosmetic Veneers Veneers are a thin tooth-coloured material bonded to the outer surface of the tooth to improve the shape and/or colour of teeth. They can also be used to close gaps between teeth. Veneers can be directly applied to teeth or indirectly made by a dental laboratory. Veneers require little or no tooth preparation. At Deddington Dental we can make a mock wax up of your teeth to show you the design of the teeth and end result. Direct Veneers These are usually made from a composite material that is directly bonded to your tooth. These are then polished. At Deddington Dental we use the latest composite materials to make the veneers appear natural. Indirect/Lab Made Veneers These are custom made in a laboratory. The teeth usually require little or no preparation. Moulds of your mouth are taken after preparation. These are then sent to a local private laboratory with directions of the shape and shade required (shade is predetermined in the lab with the help of the patient). Temporary veneers are placed for 2 weeks. Once made – the final veneers are tried in and cemented onto the teeth. Cosmetic Crowns Crowns are similar to veneers but cover the whole tooth as opposed to just the front surface. At Deddington Dental for cosmetic crowns on front teeth we usually use highly aesthetic emax crowns.

Dental Implants £1800 - £3000
Dental implants are an excellent option to replace missing teeth. They are a fixed option as opposed to dentures, which are removable. No drilling is required on adjacent teeth (like with bridges), thus preserving all of your own tooth structure.   A small painless surgical procedure is needed to place the implant into the jaw bone. The implant acts as a replacement of the missing tooth root and the abutment and crown restore the part of the tooth which is evident in the mouth.   In some cases implants can be placed as soon as the tooth is removed (known as immediate replacement) but most cases are carried out after a healing period of 3-6 months. If implants are looked after well they can last for the rest of your life. They are the closest thing to having your own tooth back. Dental implants are not suitable for all patients – a thorough implant assessment would be carried out and then suitability discussed. The Process Before implants are placed, the dentist will have assessed your mouth and discussed the best options with you. An x-ray or ConeBeam CT scan of the area will be taken to check for the important structures in the area. The implant placement is usually done under a local anaesthetic. The procedure itself is painless. The gum is peeled back and the implant is placed securely into the jaw bone. The gum is then placed back over the implant to allow it to heal and integrate. The implant is left for around 3 months to allow for healing and is reviewed in this time. A second smaller procedure is then undertaken to uncover the implant and shape the gum around it after which and impression of your mouth is taken so that the crown can be made in our hi-tech lab. Once made this can be cemented onto the implant to restore your smile.
