The Damon system of braces uses a new method for straightening teeth. They are called self-ligating braces. They are fixed braces that do not use elastic bands to secure the wire woven through brackets like conventional braces. They use a metal clip or a door to secure the wire. The clip or door uses a sliding mechanism to open and close and keep the wire secure. The number of orthodontic appointments are fewer and the length of time to adjust Damon braces is shorter. What are self-ligating Damon braces?One of the latest technological advances in orthodontics are Damon braces. Conventional fixed braces require an elastic to hold the wire in place. The elastic exerts a frictional force which has to be overcome before the wire is able to work and move your teeth. Self ligating braces are able to hold the wire in place without the need for an elastic. This means the wire is able to move freely from the outset to allow your teeth to move freely and comfortably. What are the advantages of Damon braces?As the brackets are self ligating the wire is continually working allowing you to have longer intervals between your appointments, we can see you every 10-12 weeks rather than 6-8weeks to minimise the disruption to your normal daily schedules. The brackets are smaller and without elastics they are much easier to keep clean. As the braces are freely moving the treatment duration may be reduced compared to conventional braces. Why should I choose Dr. Kyi for my Lingual treatment? Although contemporary orthodontic treatments (Damon, Clarity and Lingual braces) usually take twelve to eighteen months for the final result, more recently there have been promises on a faster result in 6-months. This treatment involves a series of aligners that contain metal to aid teeth alignment. Although these are described as “non-brace” treatment option offers the promise of a very rapid result they are only suitable for a proportion of cases. The treatment is offered by general dentists and with heavy marketing budgets. There is a higher case of relapse of the teeth back to their original position and general dentists are not able to offer the alternative brace options such as Lingual, Clarity and Damon braces.  Dr Kyi is frequently asked to review cases that have left patients with relapse after treatment.
