An orthodontic retainer is a device used after orthodontic treatment to help maintain the position of the teeth and prevent them from shifting back. Retainers are custom-made to fit the individual patient's teeth. They are usually made of plastic or a combination of plastic and wire.There are two main types of orthodontic retainers: fixed and removable. Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth, commonly on the lower front teeth.
