An orthodontic retainer is a device used after orthodontic treatment to help maintain the position of the teeth and prevent them from shifting back. Retainers are custom-made to fit the individual patient's teeth. They are usually made of plastic or a combination of plastic and wire.There are two main types of orthodontic retainers: fixed and removable. Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of the teeth, commonly on the lower front teeth. This wire is invisible from the front and is designed to remain in place for several years or even permanently. Removable retainers can be taken out by the patient for cleaning and eating. They are usually made of clear plastic or acrylic and fit over the teeth like a mouthguard. Grinding down of the adjacent teeth is not required. - Maryland bridges or resin-bonded bridges are used where too much chewing stress is not expected, ie, in restoring a lost front tooth. - Replacing multiple teeth: If you want to replace just one or two teeth a fixed bridge is possible as alternative to implants. - Replacing all teeth: The alternative to implants is the complete removable denture (conventional denture).
