Brow Lift is a procedure which isused to lift the eyebrows or restore them to a higher position; usually theoriginal position of your eyebrows in your youth.  As we age, the skin thins out due to loss ofsome elements within the skin, such as less oil glands and fat cells. Coupledwith the effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, these can result in sagging ofthe skin with some wrinkling, notably in the face, including the forehead. Candidates for a brow lift can bethose whose upper eyelids look like “curtains” going down along the sides ofthe eyes and those who have undergone upper eyelid blepharoplasty, who  after several years, appear to need additionalskin removal on the upper eyelids. For those who previously underwent uppereyelid blepharoplasty, removal of additional skin on the upper eyelids mayfurther pull down the eyebrow and may put the eyebrows in a more awkwardposition or pull up the upper eyelid and cause a perennial “surprised” look! Inthis instance, the individual may just need a brow lift for the skin creaseover the upper eyelids to re-appear and give the patient a refreshed look.

Blepharoplasty is the medicalterm used to remove the excess skin and the fat that is pushing out the skin,in both the upper and lower eyelids. The term blepharoplasty can also apply tothe creation of an upper eyelid fold, more popularly done in Asian or Orientalpatients.  For the more senior set ofpatients, the sides of the upper eyelids may cause them to experience a “blindspot” of their peripheral vision; in which case, a combination of a brow lift andupper eyelid blepharoplasty is best suited. Sometimes, if there is too muchskin that folds down from the upper eyelids, it may cause the eyelash to gointo the eye, in a condition called entropion.   In all these conditions, relief is found inan upper eyelid blepharoplasty. In the lower eyelid, the extrabulge just below the eyelashes is more likely due to the hypertrophy of themuscle and not because of fat. However, if you find the bulge to be about ahalf centimeter or a centimeter below the eyelashes, the bulge is more likelydue to the fat that is pushing out the skin. The drooping of the upper eyelidstogether with the bulging of the skin and fat at the lower eyelids give anindividual the “tired look” and “adds age” to the patient’s facial features.  Removal of these excess fat and skin, both inthe upper and lower eyelids gives the individual a more “refreshed” look of theface There are patients who, becauseof the chronic presence of bulging of fat on the lower eyelids has caused someweakness of the canthal ligaments; which hold the margin of the lower eyelidsclose to the eye. In these group of patients, an additional procedure calledcanthopexy prevents the white of the eye from being overexposed.
