I visited Dr Rajat Gupta approximately an year back. Yes, it took me an year to make up my mind and undergo this surgery!
To begin with, Gynecomastia is a problem that can happen to anyone. Some hormonal changes can take place in someone’s body and it happens. I had read somewhere that nearly 25% of human male population has this problem, that is one out of every 4 males. For a person having this problem, it is a day in day out stress. People judge you everyday. Some even call you names, as it happened with me. I have a very demeaning nickname, which my college mates used to call with me. It just makes you very disappointed with your own body and then starts this cycle of self validation, where you try to go to gym and other places and try to get rid of this problem. Sadly there is not enough awareness about this problem. Gym instructors will say that by regular chest workouts this can be taken care of, but frankly that doesn’t happen. Moreover, somehow if you can’t go to the gym, just because of its nature, it comes back prominently and then again you start feeling terrible about yourself!!
Approx 5 years back, I started looking out on the Internet about this problem. I just realised what the problem actually was. Gynecomastia is gland formation in the male chest area due to hormonal imbalance during adolescence. After reading about it online I could understand that this can happen with anyone and the gym is not the solution for this.
Next, started the search for a good doctor who can remove this from my body. The first thought came to my mind was to meet my own uncle who is a general surgeon. But what general surgeons do is very often an imperfect operation, many times there are scars on the body of people who have got general surgery done! One scar replaces by another even after the surgery. In one particular account of a person, a kidney was taken out by the doctor while the patient was under anaesthesia! All such things discouraged me to not to pursue a normal surgery
I could again see numerous people abroad getting it done by cosmetic surgeons, but the challenge this time was about finances. Such a surgery in the US could easily cost $5,000 plus travelling and stay expenses could make it a $10,000 affair! This is Rs 8,00,000. So, I ruled this out again!
Few years passed by when last year I was rating my family doctor on Practo. Suddenly, it came up to me to look for Gynecomastia surgery on Practo and there it was Dr Rajat Gupta’s name at the top. I decided that I will pay him a visit and at least get an opinion about it.
I met him last year and Dr Gupta explained to me about various facets related to this problem. He told me that I had a level of 2.5 Gynecomastia (Highest level is level 4). He explained to me how he will use the latest surgical technique, using LASER, to extract the gland and the surrounding fat tissue. In my case, there was a need for skin contouring as well. I told him about the kidney incident as well. He was quite shocked initially because he couldn’t believe someone could do that. But when he explained to me the procedure I was convinced that such a thing is not possible.
He told me about the cost of the surgery which though wasn’t nominal, still wasn’t as high as what I would have incurred had I gotten it treated abroad.
So, the next thing was to get mentally prepared for surgery. In any person’s life, any surgery is a big deal. Plus this doubt that the glands shouldn’t grow back. So, it took me time to make up my mind and then there were some other personal exigencies due to which things got delayed. But I finally decided to visit Dr Gupta again last month and get this thing done! I even thought of taking a second opinion but then dropped the idea after reading more about him. Many people have called him a “Master Sculptor” of the body!
So, I visited him again to take the date of surgery. To be honest the staff of the hospital had been following up with me. Ms Amrita would contact me often and ask me if she could fix an appointment with Dr Gupta and sort out any doubts I might have. I took my time and the good thing is that everyone was patient about it.
Finally, I got the surgery done this month. And I can’t express enough my gratitude of seeing the glands outside my body. Again the staff at the Operation centre were very helpful, cooperative and courteous, especially nurse Ms Priyanka.
Gynecomastia for me is gone! The body is still recovering and healing post-surgery, but within 2 weeks time, I could feel the satisfaction. Frankly now, in the hindsight, I feel that I was unnecessarily worried and that I should have gotten this done much earlier.
I would like to thank Dr Rajat Gupta for allaying all my fears and helping me get rid of this problem. Thank you once again! Cheers!
