Excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, is a condition where patients sweat profusely for no reason.  Patients either sweat excessively in their hands, underarms, forehead, feet or, in extreme cases, all over their body.

What causes Excessive Sweating?

Excessive sweating is caused by age, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, illness or certain medications.

How is Excessive Sweating treated?

Excessive sweating is treated by oral medications, electromagnetic impulses, neuro-muscular relaxant injections, laser assisted treatments and by surgical procedures, including liposuction and endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) surgery.

Are Excessive Sweating treatments painful?

Patients will feel injection pain with injectable treatments.  Laser treatments are performed after administering local anaesthetic and patients do not feel pain during the procedure. Surgical procedures are performed under general anaesthesia and patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

Patients will recover two days after laser or injectable procedures. It will take about a week for patients to recover from surgical procedures to treat excessive sweating.

What care is required after an Excessive Sweating treatment?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least a month.  Patients should not smoke or drink alcohol for at least a month.

Excessive Sweating Treatment  
Excessive sweating is a common problem and can be a source of embarrassment. Sometimes simple measures such as prescription strength antiperspirants can be helpful. For excessive sweating of the hands and feet, iontophoresis can be helpful. This involves soaking the hands in a liquid through which a very gentle electric current is passed. During the treatment, the gentle electric current gives a very slight tingling sensation but is not uncomfortable. For persistent hyperhidrosis, certain injections can be very effective. The usual site of treatment is under the arms, where small evenly spaced injections are placed just under the surface of the skin. The benefit of excessive sweating treatment lasts between six and nine months and can then be repeated if wished
