What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins, also known as varicosities, are thick and dark blue or purple veins that are seen in the lower limbs of patients. They are caused by damaged or poorly functioning valves within the veins. Surgical and nonsurgical procedures are used to treat varicose veins.

How are Varicose Veins treated?

Varicose veins are treated by making patients wear compression stockings, by helping them to lose weight, by sclerotherapy, injecting  a chemical into the vein to make it collapse, laser and radiofrequency assisted procedures, phlebectomy procedures, where veins are removed by making small cuts on the surface of the skin and by surgical procedures involving tying or stripping of the varicose veins.

Are Varicose Vein treatments painful?

Minimally invasive treatments for varicose veins are performed after administering local anaesthetic to the treatment area. Surgical varicose vein removal procedures are performed under general anaesthesia. Patients will not feel any pain during the procedures.

When will I recover after Varicose Veins treatments?

It takes about five weeks to completely recover from minimally invasive and surgical varicose vein treatments.

What care is required after Varicose Vein treatments?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should wear compression stockings to prevent blood clots. They should not wear tight clothing or high heeled shoes. They should elevate their legs while sitting. They should not smoke or drink alcohol. They should not gain weight after varicose vein treatments. They should avoid strenuous exercise and lifting heavy objects for at least two weeks.

The Majority of patients can be treated under local anaesthetic as a ambulatory (walk in walk out) procedure. This may not always be the case. In this scenario vein stripping combined with vein mapping will usually give a durable result.  This will require a general anaesthetic but can often be performed as a day case. Its always advisable to discuss the risks and benefits of any procedure as well as the evidence and alternative options. Open surgical intervention: Unilateral: Simple (primary) $5717 Complex (recurrent veins) $7193 Bilateral: Simple (primary) $7975 Complex (recurrent veins) $9890

The pre-op examination and was very thorough with his explanation and what he was going to doJeff, New Zealand, 18 12 18

I went in for varicose veins to be removed in my right leg. They were a mess. It was something I was going to do years ago but you always make excuses to put things off or there is something more important to do. It was when some-one commented how bad they looked that made me do some thing about it. I only had it done 6 days ago but not taking any pain killers or pills of any sort, the only bit of pain but to look at them even now is totally different. I looked up on the internet and this clinic seemed to have everything in close proximity to where we lived and for their own operation. The doctor was more than very good, Dr Gordon sat us down, explained everything that needed to be explained, done the pre-op examination and was very thorough with his explanation and what he was going to do. A nice fella with an excellent staff and follow up the team. Big thanks to him and his staff.
