What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is the term used when one woman donates her eggs, for medical research, or to be implanted in another woman as part of an assisted reproduction procedure. The egg donor may be related or unrelated to the recipient. Once the donor has agreed to donate eggs, the eggs are retrieved from her ovaries through an ultrasound assisted surgical procedure. Egg donation supports IVF assisted reproductive procedures, especially for women whose eggs are of poor quality or for women who are too old to conceive.

How long does the Egg Donation procedure take?

While the actual egg retrieval process takes just a few minutes, the administrative and screening procedures for egg donation could take about a month. The procedure is performed under conscious sedation or mild anaesthesia.

What is the recovery time after Egg Donation?

The recovery time after egg donation is usually one month. The donor’s response to the post-ovarian stimulation medications will determine whether she can travel after the eggs are retrieved. This depends on each individual donor. The donor should travel only after the doctor certifies that she is fit to travel. It is important that the donor takes the prescribed post-operative medications correctly. The donor should not indulge in strenuous physical activity or sexual intercourse for a few days after egg donation.

Regardless of age, if you have had no success in trying to conceive for six months or longer, we recommend that you schedule a consultation to determine if any problems exist. During this visit, one of our fertility specialists will review your medical history, perform preliminary testing that will put your mind at ease or identify issues early enough to allow for treatment, and advise you about the best medical options for you. If you have been referred to us by your Gynecologist and have had tests done previously, please bring the medical reports with you to your first consultation.Initial testing includes a Pelvic Ultrasound Scan which is a diagnostic procedure that assesses pelvic organs and detects abnormalities in the uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes, a Hormone Profile & Viral Screen which is a blood test required to check blood count, hormone levels, and whether a woman has ever been infected with certain viruses, and a Semen Analysis which is a test performed on a sample of semen to check both sperm count and motility.

My treatment at the clinica Vistahermosa has exceeded my expectations and has now resulted in the birth of my baby boy. This was my second IVF treatment in Alicante and coming from Ireland with limited Spanish I always had the ladies from the international dept to translate and guide me with the doctors etc. The cost comparison was also a major factor as treatment in Ireland is so expensive but as I love Alicante, tge people, the culture it was an easy option to go to this clinic and I have not felt anything but supported before, during and after treatment which is not something we would get at home.

This is suggested when the ovaries have failed due to early menopause, chemotherapy / radiotherapy, or for women who have not responded to stimulation treatment themselves. Donated eggs come from anonymous donors who must be 30 years of age or less and have undergone various medical tests, medical history and assessments prior to donating.

The initial consultation  takes approximately 2 hours and we would speak about donors, go through how the treatment flows and you would be seen by Dr. Benito for a basic scan and trial embryo transfer (passing an empty catheter through the cervix).  They are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 15:30.

In Spain, egg and semen donation is anonymous by law and, therefore, the identity of the donor can never be revealed.
