What is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is the term used when one woman donates her eggs, for medical research, or to be implanted in another woman as part of an assisted reproduction procedure. The egg donor may be related or unrelated to the recipient. Once the donor has agreed to donate eggs, the eggs are retrieved from her ovaries through an ultrasound assisted surgical procedure. Egg donation supports IVF assisted reproductive procedures, especially for women whose eggs are of poor quality or for women who are too old to conceive.

How long does the Egg Donation procedure take?

While the actual egg retrieval process takes just a few minutes, the administrative and screening procedures for egg donation could take about a month. The procedure is performed under conscious sedation or mild anaesthesia.

What is the recovery time after Egg Donation?

The recovery time after egg donation is usually one month. The donor’s response to the post-ovarian stimulation medications will determine whether she can travel after the eggs are retrieved. This depends on each individual donor. The donor should travel only after the doctor certifies that she is fit to travel. It is important that the donor takes the prescribed post-operative medications correctly. The donor should not indulge in strenuous physical activity or sexual intercourse for a few days after egg donation.

I came alone from Ireland to freeze my eggs. I had heard mixed stories on Ireland and did my research and this clinic rated high. I cannot say enough good things about my experience. I stayed 2 weeks in Madrid and was treated so well, medication personalised almost daily, successful extraction, nurses and doctors so kind and just put me at ease. If you are contemplating, don't hesitate. I don't usually write reviews but felt compelled as had such a good experience especially in light of COVID.

Egg donation treatment for early menopause and low egg reserve. Initially referred by the clinic in Ireland. Found communication with Clinic Vistahermosa very professional. All appointments were very smooth, and I was provided with an English-speaking person so any questions could be answered. Had a number of IVF treatments, had our son on my very first treatment and four years later on our last attempt had our healthy baby girl. Did have five unsuccessful attempts in between. Embryo donation is a very simple reproduction treatment with a high degree of success. In this process, embryos from previous treatments, which have successfully culminated and that have been donated anonymously by couples who have already managed to be parents, are transferred to other patients in order to achieve a full-term pregnancy and have a healthy baby. These embryos are cryopreserved as they come from couples where the woman has got pregnant after a cycle of in vitro fertilisation. These couples allow us to use these embryos in other patients who need them. Embryo donation together with egg donation is one of the treatments with a higher success rate as it can reach 90% after three cycles. In general, a single embryo is transferred, because the success rate exceeds 60% in the first attempt regardless of the woman’s age. The only requirement is to have a normal uterus and good health. In Spain, egg and semen donation is anonymous by law and, therefore, the identity of the donor can never be revealed.
