What is a root canal procedure?

Root canal procedures, or endodontics, is a treatment for the inner pulp of the tooth. They are performed to save teeth from extraction. The dentist or endodontist, a root canal specialist, cleans out the decayed or damaged pulp without breaking the exterior of the tooth root. The cleaned root canal is filled with a bio-compatible rubber-like material called gutta-percha. They are also performed for patients with damaged teeth caused by accidents or fractures. The procedure takes one to two hours to complete.

What are the types of root canal procedures?

Primary root canal treatments are performed using stainless steel files. Stainless steel files could remove only a small amount of infection and could easily break. The more advanced and flexible nickel titanium files do not break easily and are able to clean the entire infected area easily. Rotary instruments used to clean the root canal are quicker than manual instruments. Other advanced root canal procedures make use of ultrasound or laser to effectively clean the root canal.

Is a root canal procedure painful?

Root canal procedures are performed under local anaesthetic. Patients will not feel pain during the procedure.

What is the recovery time after having a root canal procedures?

Patients take about three days to recover after a root canal procedure. Some patients require a week to recover from a root canal procedure.

When can I travel by air after a root canal procedure?

It is safe to travel by air one day after a root canal procedure. Patients should check with their dentist before embarking on their journey. If they feel pain or discomfort, they should postpone their journey until it abates.

What care is required after a root canal procedure?

Patients should take all prescribed medications correctly. They should not eat until the anaesthetic wears off. They should not eat or drink very hot or very cold food for at least a week. They should avoid eating hard food or sticky food. If swelling occurs they should sleep with their head raised for a few days to bring it down.

What are the alternatives to root canal procedures?

Alternatives to root canal procedures include extractions and pulp capping procedures.

Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment involves the removal of the pulpal tissues from the damaged tooth. The pulp can be infected or inflamed due to either deep caries or heavily restored tooth that involves the pulp. Symptoms experienced may range from occasional sensitivity to hot and cold foods, to constant throbbing or a dull ache, to pain on chewing. Root canal treatment saves teeth that would otherwise have to be extracted. The goal of root canal treatment is to improve the health of your damaged tooth. Under local anaesthetic, during treatment, the pulp is removed from the root canals, and then the canals are cleaned and disinfected. The treatment may take one or more visits. The canals are then sealed with an inert material that occupies the space vacated by the removal of the pulp. After the internal of the tooth has been treated, the external will be restored with a crown to protect the tooth underlying structures and to bring the tooth back into function.

New Age Cosmetic Dentists

304 Orchard Road, #05-42 Lucky Plaza, Singapore, Singapore 238863
Many people who are not familiar with us will ask us why we are calledHougang Dental Centre when we are located in the heart of Orchard Road. Well, that's because our clinic has its humble beginnings in the Hougang heartlands. Dr Chan Joon Yee took over a dental practice at Blk 631, Hougang Avenue 8 in January 1991 and has been providing Hougang heartlanders with basic, general dental services ever since. Dr Chan Joon Yee graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1988. After completing his National Service as dental officer in the navy, he began private practice by working as a locum at various private clinics from Jurong, Eunos to Orchard Road. With a keen interest in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Dr Chan frequently consults TCM specialists on alternative therapies. He also has an interest in wilderness medicine, anti-aging science and exercise physiology. Dr Chan speaks English, Mandarin, Hakka, Cantonese, Hokkien and Malay. With Thailand being his second home, he also speaks Thai. Many of the patients who identify our practice with cosmetic dentistry are already very familiar with our Empress crowns. They look really cool and not only improved social lives, but career opportunities as well. Indeed, our "instant orthodontics" with Empress crowns have helped quite a number of people to look good for their job interviews and wedding photos. We started Hougang Dental Centre way back in 1991 at a housing e
