What are braces?

Braces are dental devices used to align teeth correctly so that patients get beautiful smiles, comfortable bites and clear speech. The dental speciality that covers braces is called orthodontics.

What types of braces are available?

Braces are structural or cosmetic. Structural braces are fitted for children while cosmetic braces are placed for adults and adolescents. Braces may be fixed or removable. Structural or traditional braces are made of stainless steel. Cosmetic braces are made of clear ceramic material or clear plastic. Some braces are self-ligating, that is, they use a slide mechanism rather than elastic bands to connect to the dental archwire. Lingual braces are metal braces placed on the inner surface of teeth. This type of brace is not visible and are preferred by patients requiring cosmetic braces.

How long do you have to wear braces for?

The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the needs and orthodontic problems of each individual patient. Treatments for adults may take a longer time. On average, patients need to wear braces for about 2 years and then they need to wear a retainer to maintain the corrected position of teeth. For some adults treatment may take about 3 years.

How are braces installed on teeth?

For fixed braces, the orthodontist dries the teeth and places glue or bonding cement on the braces. The braces are placed on teeth and a UV light is shone on them to cure the glue or cement. For removable braces, an impression of the teeth is taken and a technician makes the removable brace consisting of a plastic plate and wires. The brace is then fitted on teeth.

How do braces work on teeth?

Braces exert a steady pressure on teeth. The pressure is periodically adjusted as needed by the orthodontist. Eventually the pressure exerted by braces corrects the alignment of teeth.

Do braces hurt?

Braces are uncomfortable when first placed on teeth. Patients experience soreness and need to get used to the pressure exerted on the teeth by braces. Patients normally get used to braces within a month.

They have a lot of integrity and you would never worry about being ripped off hereLaura, Dublin, 04 09 18

I had orthodontic and dental treatment here over the past two years. Very very happy with results. Liam O'Droma is highly skilled and I would trust him completely. He gives honest advice about your treatment options and cares about the treatment he gives you. I am very nervous of needles and when I had to have a filling. I barely felt the needle and it barely noticed I was having a filling! This has never happened before! I'll never go to another dentist now. All the staff are lovely, especially Liam's assistant Suzanna who is just a lovely person and also seems to be very knowledgeable. They have a lot of integrity and you would never worry about being ripped off here. In fact, they are very affordable yet deliver a very high standard of care. You will be in safe hands here. I would highly recommend them, especially if you are nervous about going to the dentist.

Dublin Orthodontics Clontarf - Dental Clinic in Ireland

Dublin Orthodontics Clontarf

192 Clontarf Road, Clontarf
Dublin Orthodontics is a group of four orthodontic practices in Dublin.  We specialise in providing orthodontic treatment to adults and children. All our orthodontists are on the specialist orthodontic register, which means they have completed 2-3 years of postgraduate training in orthodontics, in addition to five years at dental school.  This advanced knowledge, together with the state-of-the-art technology we use at our practices, assures you of the highest quality care. Our mission is to provide excellent orthodontic treatment in a friendly, caring environment, prioritising your needs.  We use the most advanced techniques to provide the most effective and efficient means to identify and address you and your family's orthodontic needs.
Braces
Most orthodontic treatment is carried out using fixed braces, sometimes known as ‘train track’ braces. This system uses a combination of metal brackets and flexible wires to gently move your teeth. Most orthodontists believe this is the most effective and precise way to move your teeth. The metal brackets we use are very small – smaller than the ones that many people remember from 10 or 20 years ago. Colours can be placed on the brackets for younger patients.

Invisalign™
This system consists of a series of removable and virtually clear aligners which are created from 3D computer images of your teeth and mouth. Each aligner is replaced every 2-3 weeks. As you progress through each aligner, your teeth move little by little, week by week. Aligners are removed for eating and drinking, and for cleaning your teeth. Invisalign® is only suitable for minor corrections.

Wonderful healthy perfect teethmarygil, Ireland, 27 01 17

My two daughters, Aimee and Josephine went to Dr. Desmond Mc Elroy for ORTHODONTICS TREATMENT when they were in SANTA SABINA secondary school.. The professionalism and quality of work was excellent. Dr Mc Elroy was in charge. He spoke to each parent and each child on each visit to explain progress. He is generous with his time and expertise. All the staff are well trained and educated in their field.. My daughters teeth are excellent and healthy now, Not only did Dr Mc Elroy give them a confident smile, he also referred them to the very best Dentists/ Doctors, where necessary, to look after the care of their teeth. My daughters are over eighteen now and have moved on to College. They have recently returned by DART , themselves, ( which is on our doorstep and runs via Clontarf ) to Dr Mc Elroy for professional backup treatment and advice. Aimee and Josephine would not go to any other ORTHODONTIST. Dr. Desmond Mc Elroy gave my children one of the best gifts ....wonderful healthy perfect teeth. The Clinicis housed in a wonderful old house in The Crescent, Clontarf. Parents are encouraged to attend for updates on their childs progress. You are always greeted with a smile. Mr Mc Elroy is in charge. Your children will get great respect and the best dental treatment from him and his polite staff. It is a great tribute to this Clinic that my daughters can pick up the phone and book an appointment for advice any time. It has been a positive journey for my family.
