What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth shaped covering used as a cap over damaged teeth. The purpose of placing a crown is to improve the appearance and strength of the damaged tooth. Crowns are also placed over surgically inserted dental implants.

What are the different types of Dental Crowns?

The types of dental crowns include ceramic crowns, zirconia crowns, porcelain covered corrosion resistant metal crowns or porcelain fused to metal crowns, corrosion resistant metal crowns and gold crowns.

What is the best type of crown?

The best type of crown depends on the need of each individual patient and the position of the tooth. For instance, some people would find a gold crown placed on a front tooth unsightly. Ceramic, tooth coloured crowns placed on the front teeth maintain the natural appearence of the smile.

How long will a Dental Crown last?

Crowns are expected to last for about 5 years. Some crowns could last for up to 30 years. The life of a crown depends on the dental hygiene practiced by the patient and general wear and tear caused by biting, chewing or grinding. Crowns may crack if the patient has an accident.

Is it painful to get a Dental Crown?

Dentists inject local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and gum before placing the crown. The patient will not feel any pain while the crown is being placed. After the anaesthetic wears off the patient may feel mild pain or sensitivity for a few hours.

Dr Eamon Kearney, Dental Practice Cork - Dental Clinic in Ireland

Made my dental experience so enjoyableMaeve, Ireland, 01 07 20

Made my dental experience so enjoyable! I was recommended Dr Kearney by a friend as I had only moved to Cork recently. I had to have a root canal and it was very scary and expensive (I’m a student). Eamonn was an absolute gentleman and such a professional. He was the first dentist I felt wasn’t trying to get as much money out of me as possible. He explained exactly what my options were, what he was doing and showed my Xrays, involving me in the decisions. I never felt any pain or discomfort whatsoever and even dozed off. No pain after the procedures either! The rest of the team made the experience just as good. The dental nurse and receptionist (I can’t remember names I’m so sorry) were so kind and thoughtful and I looked forward to chatting with them. Post lockdown I made two trips of 300km+ just to attend this clinic. Couldn’t recommend this team enough! Made me look forward to the dentist!

Very thankful for the work carried out and results of my Extraction, Fillings and Teeth CleaningMichael, Cork, 05 09 16

2 fillings,a deep clean of all teeth and an extraction Outstanding dentist...I would have a fear of dentists due to previous experiences. However from Day1 Dr Fenn put me at ease. His demeanor is excellent which is very important in my opinion when choosing a dentist. He lays out exactly what work needs to be done calmly and professionally. Dr Fenn performed all procedures as painlessly as possible and with great care.Even the extraction wasnt bad! Could not recommend enough.Very thankful for the work carried out. A word too for Louise the dental nurse/receptionist. She is a welcoming face once you arrive and was very helpful with any queries i had.

I didn't even feel the needles.deborah, Ireland, 12 02 15

Dr. Pat Carey is a magician. I am a very nervous patient, went today for an extraction, and I swear I didn't even feel the needles, or the extraction. Was in and out in twenty minutes. Staff exceptionally friendly, and Pat is an amazing dentist.
