What is a Dental X-Ray?

Dental X-rays are procedures where photographs of the teeth and mouth are taken to diagnose dental and oral disease or adverse dental conditions. An extensive examination of the patient’s mouth and teeth is done on the first visit to a dentist. This usually involves the use of X-rays. X-rays help dentists detect dental and oral problems that are not easily visible to the naked eye.

How is a Dental X-Ray performed?

Dental X-rays are either intra-oral or extra-oral. The film is placed outside the mouth and the image is taken for an extra-oral X-ray. The film is placed inside the mouth and the image is taken for an intra-oral X-ray. Depending on the machine used, patients may feel pressure on their cheek for a few moments when the dentist focuses the camera.

What does a Dental X-Ray show?

X-rays allow the dentist to see, bone loss, gum disease, dental infections, positioning of wisdom teeth, oral cysts or abscesses, tumours, jaw fractures and foreign objects in the mouth or teeth.

Are Dental X-Rays safe?

Dental X-rays are the safest among X-rays and patients are exposed to very little radiation. Dentists use digital X-rays that are less harmful than traditional X-rays. Patients should tell the dentist about any existing health condition or if they are pregnant.  The dentist will not use X-rays to risk the health of patients unless absolutely necessary.

What are the alternatives to taking a Dental X-Ray?

Alternatives to the dental X-ray include Cari vu, a diagnostic device using transillumination technology and the Diagnodent laser assisted diagnostic device.

Dental X-Ray ₹100
X-rays and Intraoral PicturesWhat Are X-rays?In 1895, physicist Wilhelm Roentgen was intrigued by glowing cathode tubes and decided to see what they could do. He found that the rays they emitted could pass through certain solid objects and leave a shadowy image of that object on a fluorescent screen. He was even more amazed to find that when the rays passed through body parts, such as his hand, the bones beneath the skin became clearly visible on the screen. Because he didnt know exactly what was causing this phenomenon, he labeled the rays " X," which is the mathematical symbol for anything that is unknown.Scientists today know that X-rays are a form of energy that travels in waves. X-rays can enter solid objects, where they either are absorbed or continue to pass through the object. The denser the material X-rays enter, the more they are absorbed and the less they are able to pass through.Teeth and bone are very dense, so they absorb X-rays, but gums and cheeks are much less dense, so X-rays pass through more easily. Thats why cheeks and gums appear dark and without detail on the X-ray film, but teeth show up much lighter. And fillings, which are even denser than bone, will show up as a solid, bright white area. Dental caries (cavities) will show up on an X-ray as a darker patch in a light tooth.

AbstractThe aim of this article is to explain the basic principles ofdigital radiography, and to discuss the intra- and extra-oralimaging systems currently available. There are two main typesof digital sensors available. One is based on charge coupleddevice technology and the other consists of phosphor storageplates. The advantages and disadvantages of each are highlightedwith particular attention to orthodontics.Key words: Charge coupled devices, digital radiography, orthodonticsIntroductionDigital radiography has been used widely in medicine, but itwas only in the 1980s that the first intra-oral sensors weredeveloped for use in dentistry. Unfortunately, the early systemscould not capture panoramic and cephalometric images, and thismade it impossible for surgeries to abandon film processingand adopt digital technology. Recently, the development of cost-effectiveintra- and extra-oral digital technology coupled with an increasein computerization of practices has made digital imaging a superioralternative in many respects to conventional film imaging.Advantages of this type of system for the orthodontist and thepatient include the ability to gain cephalometric analysis andsuperimposition quickly on the chairside computer, manipulationof images to aid diagnosis, dose reductions, and the ease ofstorage.
Panoramic Dental X-Ray ₹350 - ₹500
Panoramic films are extraoral films, in which the film is exposed while outside the patients mouth, and they were developed by the United States Army as a quick way to get an overall view of a soldiers oral health. Exposing eighteen films per soldier was very time consuming, and it was felt that a single panoramic film could speed up the process of examining and assessing the dental health of the soldiers; soldiers with toothaches are not very effective. It was later discovered that while panoramic films can prove very useful in detecting and localizing mandibular fractures and other pathologic entities of the mandible, they were not very good at assessing periodontal bone loss or tooth decay.
