Rhytidectomy, or facelift surgery as it is commonly called, is a procedure which is performed for a wide variety of reasons, namely treating jowl formation, distorting jaw line, double chin folds, wrinkling and removal of excess skin. This surgery often can be complex and should be performed by surgeons who have specific expertise in facelift surgery.

Incision vary depending on the individual patient as well as the desired outcome. Generally, incisions are made starting at the temple, moving around the ear and are hidden behind the ear and in the hair.   Cuts are placed to follow the natural skin creases.  Following lifting of the skin, the underlying muscle and tissues are tightened and secured; excess skin is trimmed and the incision is closed with fine stitches and/or clips.  In some cases, a drainage tube may be inserted.

Immediately after surgery, some mild pain and discomfort is common.   The dressing and drainage tube are both removed the next day before discharge from hospital. During recovery period, it is recommended to have the head elevated when lying down. Usually, stitches and staples are removed within 5 to 10 days following surgery. Recovery tends to take 2 to 3 weeks before normal activity may be resumed.  Scars become less noticeable and disguised with time but total healing may take up to 18 months.  Complications are infrequent but include bleeding, infection, unfavourable scarring, nerve damage and minor cosmetic irregularities.

Neck Lift

Platysmaplasty, commonly called Necklift surgery, is an operation which helps restore the wrinkles and folds in the neck related to ageing.   With necklift, incisions are placed around the ear but do not extend into the front hair line.  Behind the ear, the length of the cut varies based on the amount of skin that needs to be re-draped.   In addition, a tiny cut is made under the chin in the chin crease, to remove the fat and access the platysma muscle to perform platysmaplasty.

Some mild pain and discomfort is common immediately after surgery.  The dressing and drainage tube are both removed the next day before discharge from the hospital. During the recovery period, we recommend you have the head elevated when lying down to avoid as much activity as possible and to report any undue discomfort.   All stitches and staples are usually removed within 5 to 10 days following surgery.

Recovery usually takes 2 to 3 weeks after which normal activity may be resumed.  Scars become less noticeable with time and are easily disguised in natural skin creases.

Complications are infrequent but include bleeding, infection, unfavourable scarring, nerve damage and minor cosmetic irregularities.  All this is discussed in detail during consultation.

Most prominent ears, known medically as Pinnaplasty or Otoplasty, lack a normal fold of cartilage or have excess cartilage.  Surgery can correct deformities and set ears back closer to the head and create a natural look.   With children, the operation is usually carried out after the age of 5 when the cartilage has adequate strength to hold stitches and they may return to school after a week whilst adults may return to work within 48 hours.

Surgery may be performed either under a local anaesthetic with or without sedation or under general anaesthetic.  A skin incision is made behind the ear to expose the ear cartilage.  This is then sculpted and stitches are inserted to help maintain the new shape of the cartilage. Redundant skin is sometimes removed.  The wound is closed and a turban-like head bandage is secured in place for a week. The surgical scar is usually well hidden and is not noticeable. Bleeding and infection may occur but rare.

Rhinoplasty surgery or Nose Job helps to improve the nasal aesthetics and function. Perfection in rhinoplasty surgery is not realistic as the thickness and texture of your skin, the strength, shape and symmetry of the nasal bones and cartilages, healing power of your body following surgery and the skill of the surgeon all have an impact on the outcome.   The results refine over 9 - 12 months following surgery and continued changes in the shape of the nose occur with time.

Surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic.  Cuts are made only inside (in endonasal rhinoplasty) or inside and outside (open rhinoplasty).  The nose and the skin are lifted off the bone and cartilage underneath.   A hairline fracture may be made in the nasal bones to allow the change in the shape of the nose.  Small pieces of bone and cartilage may be removed from or even added to the nose to smooth out any bumps or dips.   Finally, all cuts are stitched in place.   A small dressing is inserted inside the nose.  This is removed the next day and a temporary splint on the outside of the nose is used for 10 days.

Minor discomfort, blocked nose, discharge of blood stained mucous, nasal crusting, bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes for 1 to 2 weeks is common.  It may take up to 3 months for breathing to be clear again.  Sun exposure during the first 6 months after surgery can result in skin redness and should be avoided. Numbness and rigidity of the nasal tip are common after surgery but this settles within 6 - 12 months.

Most people need 1 - 2 weeks off work, especially but 6 weeks if you play any sport.
