About The Oving Clinic - Oving

The clinics are located in Oving and Bagnor Regis in Sussex and in Guildford in Surrey. The Oving clinic is registered by the West Sussex health Authority as a Day Case Facility, the National Care Standards Commission and the Healthcare Commission. Dr John Tanner

MBBS, BSc,FFSEM, Dip. Musc. Med., Dip Sports Med., registered osteopath. After medical training at the Royal London Hospital, Dr Tanner began his career as a GP. His interest in sports medicine and musculoskeletal disorders led him to qualify further and he is now an authority in these areas. He has recently been awarded a fellowship of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine in the UK and Ireland. Dr Tanner teaches and lectures both nationally and internationally and is a member of an international team of specialists selected to coordinate the teaching standards of manual medicine in Europe and the West .He is also an instructor for the International Spine Intervention Society As author of ‘Better Back’, published by Dorling Kindersley, and ‘Your guide to Back Pain by Hodder Arnold, Dr Tanner’s expertise is widely recognised. Dr Tanner’s memberships include the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine and The International Spine Intervention Society. He is the Chairman of the Education Committee of The British Institute of Musculoskeletal Medicine and course organiser and tutor for medical postgraduate education.

Petra Tanner

MCSP, SRP Petra Tanner graduated from the Academy of Physiotherapy in Amsterdam in 1984. After coming to this country to experience the workings of the NHS for herself she developed two sides to her career: paediatrics and sports/manual therapy. Petra has run private musculoskeletal clinics in the UK and Bermuda since 1988. Currently, Petra is the principle physiotherapist of the Oving Clinic, as well as overseeing the management of the Clinic at all levels. Petra has written a number of papers on pain and the restoration of central nervous tissue, and lectured on connective tissue massage, sports specific treatment and various manual therapy treatment methods. Petra, being an able sportswoman herself, has a keen interest in the treatment of sports injuries. She has been involved in sports medicine since her student days when she started with the Dutch women’s first basketball team. She has been involved in a wide range of sports: climbing, cycling, fell- and road-running, tennis, sailing, martial arts, triathlon, ultimate Frisbee, dance, horse riding to name but a few. Petra also has detailed knowledge of a variety of musical skills which enables her to treat her patients with more specificity. She has trained in Active Release Technique under Dr. Mike Leahy. ART is currently the preferred treatment at the ironman triathlon events in the USA. Petra is full body qualified and spends some time every year with Dr.Leahy updating her skills.

Mr Steve Poole

Steve Poole


Steve Poole graduated from the University of Southampton in 1998. He has specialised in spinal and sports injuries,completing post-graduate courses in McKenzie therapy, acupuncture and myofascial release to name but a few. Steve is a member of the associate of chartered physiotherapists in sports medicine. (ACPSM)

Steve has a very broad background having worked in both the NHS and private sector. Steve has a special interest in high-level sports rehabilitation, having worked for Southampton football club’s academy for the last four years. Steve was also first team physio for AFC Bournemouth for half a season in 2005. Steve has also worked for the M.O.D treating army recruits for two years.

Steve likes to treat patients of all ages, from elite athletes to sedentary individuals. He combines hands on treatments with acupuncture and approach exercise regimes, to alleviate acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions

Mr James Drew

Job Title:


After a career change from being a chef James has joined his father in a private orthotics manufacturing company in Barnham (Prescription Footwear Associates). He previously worked for Orthotist. James takes over from Chris Griffiths who has been with Oving Clinic for over 10 years but will have to leave due to work pressures.
