About Active Health Solutions

Active Health Solutions for an Active Healthy Life!

We are a company of passionate health care professionals providing a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to healthcare from our bespoke clinic in Holywood, County Down.

Our mix of services include Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Chiropody, Massage Therapy, Pilates, Personal Training, Nutritional Therapy as well as the provision of Occupational Physiotherapy to a number of large companies and organisations across Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Active Health Solutions was started in 2006 by husband and wife team David & Rachel Saligari who are both are highly trained Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Specialists who met while completing their Masters of Manual Therapy in Perth, Western Australia. They and their clinical staff pride themselves on providing the most up to date and evidence treatments available.

Biography:

David met Rachel when they studied for their Master of Manual Therapy degree in Perth, Western Australia, his home town, in 2004. He followed her back to Northern Ireland and they were married in 2009. David’s has great experience in musculoskeletal private practice and occupational physiotherapy practice, having worked with excellent manual therapists in Australia. He studied at Curtin University of Technology in Australia, a hot bed of physiotherapy research and excellence in clinical practice. He has a special interest in the treatment of headache and all spinal conditions. He misses the weather, the heat and the beaches of home, as well as his family, but loves Ireland, his adopted home.

Rachel is a native of North Down, having been educated at Sullivan Upper School. She graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 2000 and has spent her time specialising in Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapy.  After completing her rotations at a large teaching hospital in Dublin, Rachel moved to New Zealand in 2002 where she took up the post of Principal Physiotherapist at an Elite Sports Medicine Clinic in Christchurch. During her time in the Southern Hemisphere, she completed a Graduate Diploma in Sports Manual Therapy and a Masters of Manual Therapy at the University of Western Australia in Perth. It was here that she met her husband, David and they both moved back to Holywood in 2005.
On returning home, whilst starting Active Health Solutions with her husband David, Rachel also held clinical roles with the University of Ulster and the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland. She has also travelled extensively with Athletics Ireland as Team Physiotherapist for the National squads at training camps as well as several European and World Championships.
Rachel became a certified STOTT Pilates Matwork instructor in in 2008 and then went on to train as a Reformer instructor in New York in 2010. She has built an excellent reputation in providing Pilates classes and private lessons for everyone ranging from the elite athlete to clients with significant injuries.
Rachel and David now have twin boys, Quinn and Luca, and so she now comes into work for a break!

Marianne hails from Wexford and completed a Higher National Certificate in Physiology and Health Science at the Institute of Technology in Carlow, before completing her Physiotherapy Degree at the University of Liverpool in 2010. Since graduating Marianne has gained excellent experience within Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy working within a private practice setting as well as being a Club Physiotherapist for her local Gaelic Football Club as well as Stratford Town Football Club. Prior to joining the Active Health Solutions Team she worked for a large Occupational Health Provider in the UK supplying Occupational Physiotherapy and Functional Restoration Programmes for injured workers across a variety of industries. Marianne joined Active Health in February 2013 and since then has completed her training with STOTT PILATES to become a Matwork Instructor. She currently looks after our Occupational Physiotherapy contracts and spends one day a week travelling to sites across Northern Ireland providing treatment and rehabilitation to injured workers. The rest of her time is spent in the clinic in Holywood providing hands on Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy for a wide range of conditions as well as teaching Pilates.
She is a keen sports woman playing hockey, badminton, Gaelic football and Camogie representing these teams at club and county level.

Ms Karen Toner

Karen qualified from NI school of Podiatry at QUB in 1989 (yes, last century!) and has worked in the NHS in London and then NI ever since. She works at the Ulster Hospital as a specialist podiatrist in the rheumatology department. She is currently studying for a masters in advancing practice and has qualifications at a masters level in vascular disease and the lower limb, the diabetic foot and Rheumatological conditions affecting the lower limb. Karen is a practice educator for the undergraduate podiatry programme at University of Ulster and also the South Eastern Trust staffside representative for the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. Karen lives in Holywood, is married to Peter and has three children.

Adam is a young podiatrist who has worked almost exclusively in sports or musculoskeletal podiatry practice. Graduating with a first class honours degree from Queen Margaret University Edinburgh he worked in a reputable private practice in the city as well as holding posts as clinical lead podiatrist in two large charity run nursing homes and whilst also becoming consultant podiatrist to Edinburgh South Cricket club, a large and competitive city centre team
Currently completing a masters degree at the University of Dundee of Sports and Biomechanical Medicine, Adam holds a passion for all things sports. He moved back to Northern Ireland in 2013 and took over a highly respected sports podiatry practice. Adam already has experience working with all levels of athlete from recreational runners to elite paralympians, rugby players, commonwealth swimmer and squash players to footballers.
Adam has a special interest in gait analysis and biomechanics and strives to practice with the latest evidence based methods. He uses a wide variety of treatment methods from patient to patient aiming to have them return to full performance as quickly as possible, from alterations of running technique to manipulation of the foot itself. He understands the importance of the information and knowledge each patients receives regarding their injury or any questions they have, and believes this is key to achieving full rehabilitation.

David Graham BSc (Hons) is a fully qualified personal trainer, specialising in coaching triathletes, swimmers and individuals with a passion for fitness.

In recent years, David has coached triathletes of all abilities; from

Sporting Background

David began competitive swimming at a young age and rose to Ulster and Irish Champion in events ranging from 200m Butterfly to 1500m Freestyle.  During the last two years of his swimming career he trained at the
University of Bath, training under GB Olympic Coaches and alongside Olympic swimmers. David made the Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Panel in 2006, however missing out on selection for the Games prompted a move to Triathlon.  David excelled as a Triathlete, winning Irish Triathlon and Duathlon Championships in 2009. He went on to compete internationally at Elite level for two years before returning to swimming in 2012 to win Championship Titles in 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly. He still ‘toes the line’ occasionally in open water swimming and running events for fun and as a reminder of how hard racing is.
David is one of the most knowledgeable triathlon coaches in Ireland, both in terms of qualifications and experience. Having competed at Elite level in both Triathlon and Swimming, David provides a truly unique 1-2-1 coaching package combining his extensive knowledge and experience with consistent support and guidance to help you achieve your potential.

Born and raised locally Mark was educated at Methodist College Belfast and Queen’s University where he studied, and later taught, political science before forging a career in the financial sector. Having always maintained a keen interest in the medical sciences (on two occasions bemusing his school teachers and university tutors by studying biology and politics together) Mark decided to return to education to study Anatomy & Physiology and Sports Massage Therapy at The Portobello Institute in Dublin. Coming from what he describes as a ‘sports mad’ family, Mark is also a keen runner, cyclist, and most recently, kayaker, his experience of which have promoted a keen interest in the treatment of sports injuries, though hopefully not too many of his own.
Mark has a keen interest in the treatment of back pain, and in particular stress and postural induced upper back, shoulder and neck pain, which frequently responds well to the deep tissue techniques associated with Sports Massage Therapy. To compliment this he has also recently added ‘Hot Stone Massage’ to his available treatments finding its relaxing and de-stressing properties an effective tool in aiding the release of muscular tension.

Miss Jane McClenaghan

Biography:

Nutritional Therapist

Jane McClenaghan’s passion for good food started in childhood, helping to bake cakes and lick the bowl in her mum’s kitchen.

She went on to study Food Science at the University of Reading, which didn’t quite satisfy her zest for knowledge about the therapeutic influence of food on our body, mind and wellbeing. So, after studying a three year Nutritional Therapy diploma at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition ,Jane spent a few years working alongside some of the UK’s foremost nutrition experts – Patrick Holford, Marilyn Glenville and Ian Marber (Food Doctor) to name a few.
Jane returned to Northern Ireland in 2001 to set up Vital Nutrition and since then has helped thousands of people make easy, manageable changes to their diets with a view to achieving a better state of health and wellbeing.
With her many years of successful clinical practice, Jane supports people with a variety of health issues, but has a special interest in hormone balance, adrenal support (stress and exhaustion) and fertility issues.
Jane is an engaging and motivational speaker and has worked with some of Northern Ireland’s biggest employers to develop and deliver workplace health programmes for the corporate market.
Jane regularly appears on local TV and radio, so listen out for her monthly slot on Carolyn Stewart’s U105 lunchtime show.
Jane is has met the strict criteria required for registration with the Nutritional Therapy Council (NTC)  and Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) — the Professional Standards Council for regulation of Nutritional Therapists. Jane is also bound by a strict code of ethics in clinical practice, governed by the British Association of Nutritional Therapy and Applied Nutrition (BANT). Jane is also a member of the Guild of Health Writers.

Karly Stevenson

Karly grew up in Vancouver, Canada where she studied her first degree in Exercise Science. She then moved to Australia to study Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland. After graduating she worked in both hospital and private practice and also provided hydrotherapy and water running for the Brisbane Bullets, a professional basketball team. Karly then moved to London and worked in a private hospital in Wimbledon, specialising in orthopaedics, sports injuries, skiing specific injuries and ante/postnatal patients. While in London she furthered her postgraduate studies in Manual Therapy. She moved to Northern Ireland and joined the Active Health team in 2011. Alongside treating patients at the clinic Karly also teaches Reformer Pilates classes. Currently Karly is also treating athletes at the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland and completing a Masters in Exercise and Sports Medicine. Outside of work she running, triathlon training and skiing whenever she gets home. Karly is passionate about her role as a physiotherapist and strives to help all her patients achieve their absolute maximum in terms of returning to health and well-being.

David graduated from UUJ in 2001. Following on from graduating he worked in the NHS before leaving to work in private practice and with sports populations. He currently works at the Sports Institute of Northern Ireland and has impressive experience travelling to major championships with a wide range of elite sportsmen and women from a number of sports including Hockey, Rugby, Athletics, Squash, Judo, Cricket, Swimming, Gaelic football, Canoe slalom, Rowing and Wheelchair Basketball. He has a special interest in the field of motor control stability and its relationship with performance. In 2008 he won best abstract at the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Sports Medicine National Conference following his work on Motor control stability training with academy rugby players.

Catherine Ferguson

Catherine graduated from UUJ in 2007. Since then she has worked in multidisciplinary musculoskeletal private practices within Northern Ireland. She has an interest in the management of spinal conditions and specialises in the Sarah Key method of assessment and treatment. She is one of only seven accredited practitioners in Northern Ireland. She has worked with a number of sporting teams, including the Holywood RFC, Cooke RFC, Clonakilty RFC, and Old Belvedere RFC. This season she is lead physiotherapist for Grosvenor RFC. Catherine, like Rachel has trained in the Stott method of Pilates. She instructs a number of classes in the clinic and has a dedicated group of followers who are progressing through this method of stability training.
