He is a The Director do ICR. He is a Orthopaedics Chief surgeon at the University Hospital of Coimbra (HUC) and professor of the Medical School of the University of Coimbra (FMUC). Orthopaedic surgeon of HUC's since 1984. Residency of Hand Surgery / Microsurgery / surgical anatomy research and experimental animal surgery at René Descartes University, Paris (France), in 1981-82. Residency of Hand Surgery / Microsurgery in London (UK), Lausanne (Switzerland) and Louisville, KC (USA), in 1983. Scholarship from the French Government, JNICT, Calouste Gulbenkian and Luso-American Foundations for scientific research in Portugal, France and USA. Founder & Chief of the Hand Surgery / Microsurgery Unit of the HUC's since 1984. PhD by the René Descartes University, Paris (France) Doctor Communitatis Europaea in Orthopaedics & Plastic Reconstructive Surgery in 1994. Chief of the Tetraplegia treatment team of HUC's since 1997. Surgical cooperation with Spain and portuguese speaking countries. Consultant of the Physical Rehabilitation Centers of Tocha (Coimbra) and Alcoitão (Lisboa). Member of nineteen national and international scientific societies. Previous positions: Secretary, Vice-President, President of the Portuguese Hand Society. Founder member of the FESSH (Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand) and former Portuguese delegate to the FESSH and IFSSH (International Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand). Founder member of the Narakas' Club (Brachial Plexus) and Tubiana's Club (hand Surgery). Member of portuguese juries for Orthopaedic Board and Member of the Jury for the European Diploma of Hand Surgery. Participated in several congresses and scientific meetings, presenting and publishing about two hundred scientific works. Member of the Scientific Committee of the french journal "La Main". Recipient of several national and international scientific awards in hand Surgery and Microsurgery. Chief of the team for Tetraplegia treatment using the electronic FreeHand System in Portugal. Member of the european research team for the SUAW 2 project (paraplegia patients). Member of the european network of centers for Hand Surgery Fellowship. Member of the Leonardo da Vinci european project (to improve the knowledge on the lymphatic system and to treat its pathologies).
