Specialty Hospital for orthopedics, neurology and physical medicine and rehabilitation

St. Catherine in Zabok, Bracak 8, (hereafter: St. Catherine Specialty Hospital) is a European Centre

of Excellence with the latest diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation infrastructure.

The hospital uses the latest technologies and methods in providing healthcare solutions

Consequently, the hospital has brought together eminent experts from the areas of

Croatian registered activities who are constantly and systematically involved in

continuing medical education (overall 13 physicians of whom 12 completed PhD

studies or are close to completion of their doctoral studies) as a guarantee of providing

superior healthcare service to our patients. Furthermore, the physicians of the St.

Catherine Specialty Hospital is affiliated with all four medical faculties in Croatia

and among them are: an associate professor, three assistant professors and another

three teachers who are in the final phase of election to the academic title of assistant

Darko Perovic, m.D. Spine Surgeon -  at St. Catherine Hospital

Dr Darko Perovic

Biography:
Dr. Perovic graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, in 1995. In 2002 he finished his residency in General Surgery and became an attendee at the Croatian Referral Center for Spine Surgery, at the Clinic for Traumatology in Zagreb. In his 15 years of professional education he has mastered the surgical treatment of degenerative spine diseases, spine tumors, spine trauma and inflammatory spine diseases. Throughout all these years Dr. Perovic has actively participated in numerous domestic and foreign symposiums and congresses on various topics regarding the spine. He augmented his spinal surgery education with a one-month training at the Centre for Spinal Injuries at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic District Hospital in 2004. In 2006 Dr. Perovic underwent further education at the Klinik für Unfall und Wiederherstelungchirurgie in Stuttgart. Dr. Perovic has also taken part in numerous courses and professional trainings among which the cervical and lumbar spinal microsurgery courses at the Spine Center, Schön Klinik Munich Harlaching, in 2004, 2008 and 2010, especially stand out. Short-term visits to the clinics in Basel and Brussels further broadened his education in the field of minimally invasive spinal surgery. Dr. Perovic is actively involved in scientific research work in the field of musculoskeletal injuries and the nervous system. He is the co-author of numerous scientific and professional papers published in international indexed journals. Dr. Perovic is the author of the chapter called “Back pain caused by trauma, osteoporotic fractures or tumors” in the book Low Back Pain, editors S. Grazio, D. Buljan, Circulation Waterfall, 2009. Furthermore, Dr. Perovic is enrolled in a doctoral postgraduate study of Biomedicine and Health, and is finishing his doctoral dissertation. He is also a lecturer at several postgraduate medical courses of continuous professional training, and holds elective courses The Spine in Clinical Practice, Sports Traumatology and Traffic Traumatism for the students of the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. Dr. Perovic is a member of the AOSpine International organization, the Croatian Society of Vertebrology (HVD), the Croatian Orthopaedic and Traumatology Association (HUOT), the Croatian Society of Surgery (HKD) and of the Croatian Society for Neuroscience (HDNZ).

Hospital Director- Assistant Professor of Radiology, School of Medicine University of Split Deputy Director After graduating from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, Dr. Boric completed his residency in radiology and received his master of science degree. In 2011 he finished his Ph.D. on the topic of “Evaluation and Classification of Early Cartilage Lesions by Magnetic Resonance”, receiving the title of Primarius. In the last 15 years he worked at the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, University Hospital Zagreb, after which he proceeded to become the head of the Paediatric Radiology Department at the Childen’s Hospital Zagreb and the head of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Unit of the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department at the Sisters of Charity University Hospital. As a lecturer at the School of Medicine he has participated in postgraduate studies of paediatrics, orthopaedics and physical medicine and rehabilitation.Dr. Boric has taken part in many national and international meetings and lectures. He is also the author of numerous book chapters and scientific articles. Dr. Boric is a member of the Croatian Medical Assembly, the Croatian Society of Radiology, and the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology. He is a member of the Medical Commission of the Croatian Olympic Committee, and is also the president of the Medical Committee of the Croatian Ice Hockey Association.
Karlo Houra, m.D., Ph.D. neurosurgeon -  at St. Catherine Hospital

Dr Karlo Houra

Biography:
Dr. Houra joined St. Catherine Specialty Hospital team for spine surgery as expert member for neurosurgery. He graduated in 2002 from the School of Medicine, and in 2007 received his doctorate in biology, with specialisation in physiology and immunobiology, at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. He completed a series of educations in the field of neurosurgery, including a Weill Cornell Seminar at the University of Salzburg , and Multimodal Intraoperative Neuromonitoring courses in Freiburg and IONM Specialties Practical Training in Lucerne. Dr. Houra continued his professional specialisation in the period from 2007 to 2009 by frequent visits abroad to work with top experts in the clinical medical science, like Prof. Deletis in New York, at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, and Dr. Szelenyi in Frankfurt at Johann Wolfgang Goethe Clinic, where he acquired additional knowledge on monitoring intraoperative evoked potentials (IOEP). In 2009 he achieved the status of Research Associate in biomedicine and health – field of clinical medical sciences, and in the following year he took his specialization exam in neurosurgery at KB Sestre milosrdnice Hospital whereupon he was conferred the title of Senior Research Associate in the scientific field of biomedicine and health – field of clinical medical sciences.

Dr Damir Hudetz

He graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb, and continued with his internship and

residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University Hospital for Trauma Surgery where he continued to

work as an orthopaedic surgeon from 2005. He received a Swiss government fellowship in 2002 and he

continued his residency in Basel where he simultaneously worked on scientific projects.

In 2009 he received his doctor’s degree in science with his Ph.D. thesis “Effect on Biofilm Production

on Staphylococcal Infection Around Titanium and Steel Implants” at the University of Zagreb School of

Medicine.

He is a member of the Croatian Medical Chamber, Croatian Orthopaedic Society, Croatian Trauma Society,

Croatian Orthopaedic and Traumatology Surgeons Association, ESSKA (European Society of Sports

Traumatology Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy), EFFORT (European Federation of National Associations of

Orthopaedics and Traumatology), SICOT and an invited member of the ACL study group.

In 2007 due to his professional and scientific accomplishments he was pronounced the youngest honorary

member of the Department of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery Bruderholz, Basel, Switzerland.

He is the head physician of the Croatian Table Tennis Association.

Dr Alan  Ivkovic - Doctor at St. Catherine Hospital

Biography:

Specialization in orthopaedic surgery obtained at the Department of

Orthopaedic Surgery University Hospital Centre Zagreb in 2007, and Ph.D. in

biomedical sciences at the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb in 2009.

He obtained the title of the assistant professor in the interdisciplinary field

of biotechnology in biomedicine in 2010. His special fields of interest are

adult joint reconstruction, foot and ankle surgery, arthroscopy and sports

medicine, regenerative orthopaedics and tissue engineering.

He teaches regenerative medicine and tissue engineering in orthopaedic

surgery at the Department of Biotechnology, University of Rijeka, and he is a

lecturer at medical schools in Zagreb and Split.

Dr Eduard Rod

He graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb and completed his

orthopaedic residency in 2003 at the Department of Orthopaedics, Zagreb. During

the specialization he spent a year at the Department of Orthopaedics in Lovran under

mentorship of Prof. Nemec, M.D., attended a course on diagnostic musculoskeletal

ultrasound systems, an AO basic course and the first year professional postgraduate

studies. He furthered his education at the Cybex Center in Switzerland and the following

10 years led the cabinet for isokinetic rehabilitation and diagnostics at General Hospital

in Koprivnica.


Renata Vuckovic

Dr. Vuckovic graduated from the School of Medicine, University

of Zagreb. In 1988, she finished her residency in radiology and since

then has worked as a radiologist in the Department of Diagnostic and

Interventional Radiology University at the University Hospital Centre

Zagreb.

In 1993 she achieved her master’s degree with the thesis

"Differentiating Glioblastoma, Solitary Metastases and Unilocular

Abscesses by Computerized Tomography".

From 2005 until 2010 she worked as a radiologist and as the chief of

the Department of Radiology in the Outpatient Clinic Medikol.

She has attended numerous education seminars in and out of Croatia.

Her special interest is in neuroradiology.

Dr. Vuckovic has also held lectures at numerous radiological,

neurological and neurosurgeon meetings. She is a member of the

Croatian Medical Assembly and the Croatian Society of Radiology.

Dr Andrej Radic

He graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Zagreb. At Clinical Hospital Merkur in Zagreb, he completed

his two-year internship. As a licensed doctor of medicine he worked as a family doctor and at emergency departments

in towns Jastrebarsko and Županja. After that he worked for three years as an attending physician at the Department

of Surgery at General Hospital Zabok, division of orthopaedic surgery, where he assisted and performed operations in

orthopaedic surgery, abdominal surgery, trauma. He also assisted at ENT and gynaecologic surgery.

He completed his specialization in orthopaedics at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Šalata, University Hospital

Center Zagreb, during which he completed a postgraduate study in orthopaedics. His skills as a surgeon he trained at

the Department of Traumatology, Clinic for Traumatology, Zagreb, the Department of Vascular surgery, Clinical Hospital

Merkur, Zagreb, and the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Clinical Hospital Dubrava, Zagreb.
