CONSULTANT OPHTHALMIC SURGEON - MA(Cantab) MB BChir FRCOphth CertLRS

Mr Ball qualified in medicine from Cambridge University in 1995 and was awarded the Fawcett Prize
in the final MB. He undertook his ophthalmology training in Brighton, Oxford and Yorkshire. Prior to his consultant appointment in 2005 he completed specialist fellowship training in corneal and refractive surgery at the Lions Eye Institute in Western Australia and at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.

In 2014 Mr Ball was appointed as an honorary consultant at the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG) in order to support the development of their refractive, cataract and corneal service. He is currently a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists committee developing the national standards for refractive surgery (vision correction) practice.

Mr Ball has performed over 5,000 laser eye surgery and refractive procedures. He is an expert in all the available techniques of vision correction and was one of the first surgeons in the UK to perform SMILE flapless laser eye surgery.
He is currently leading research into treatment modalities for keratoconus and the genetics of
corneal dystrophies.

He has published and presented on the subjects of cataract surgery, laser eye surgery and corneal disease. He is currently leading research into treatment modalities for keratoconus and the genetics of corneal dystrophies.

Mr Ball routinely uses LENSAR™ femtosecond laser technology for cataract and Clarivu (RLE) procedures.

Mr Backhouse has been a consultant at Optegra Eye Hospital Yorkshire since January 2003.

Mr Backhouse has worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at St James’ University Hospital since 2002. He has special interests in neuro-ophthalmology, uveitis and refractive surgery and is very actively involved in MOSS (Madagascan Organisation for Saving Sight), a charity which he founded in 1993. Mr Backhouse is also a member of the ‘Yorkshire World Blindness 2020 Group’, which helps ‘eye programmes’ in developing countries.

When not at work, Mr Backhouse spends time with his family and enjoys playing tennis and squash.

Mr Atkinson has been a consultant at Optegra Eye Hospital Yorkshire since it opened in January 2003. Mr Atkinson says, ‘This purpose-built, dedicated eye hospital offers an ideal venue to practice the highest standard of ophthalmology.’

Originally from the Isle of Man, Mr Atkinson has been a Consultant Ophthalmologist in Bradford since 1995. As well as treating patients with general eye conditions, Mr Atkinson has a special interest in oculoplastics.

Consultant Ophthalmologist at Bradford Royal Infirmary and Airedale Hospital. Mr Brogden graduated from the University of Leeds Medical School in 1988. He started working as a GP in Headingley for over 6 years, where he saw patients through every stage of their eye care journey.

He then undertook specialist ophthalmic training and in 2008 he accepted his current Consultant position in Bradford.

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at St James's University Hospital Leeds. Mr Cassels-Brown qualified from the University of London Medical School in 1983. He has worked in Leeds as a Consultant since 1995, initially at Leeds General Infirmary and since 2001 at St James University Hospital. He provides high volume one stop small incision day case cataract surgery and is also a Consultant in Community Eye Health to the five primary care trusts in Leeds. Mr Cassels-Brown specialises in small incision cataract surgery.

Professor Chang has been a consultant at Optegra Eye Hospital Yorkshire since January 2003. Mr Chang says, ‘My colleagues and I cover all the sub-specialties within ophthalmology. This means that patients with specific conditions are appropriately referred and will receive the best level of care.’

Professor Chang is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Head of Oculoplastics, Lacrimal and Orbital surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Professor Chang is also the current Honorary Secretary of The Royal College of Ophthalmologists, UK. He served as Council member on the Royal College of Ophthalmologists for five years prior to this.

He was also elected member (since 2005) of the Ophthalmic Group Committee of the British Medical Association and ophthalmic member of the National Ocular Oncology Group, UK. He is on the Joint Committee on Surgical Training, serving on the interface Group on Cosmetic Surgery. Miss Devenport graduated from the University of Southampton Medical School in 1991 and continued her specialist training in Bradford. Consultant Ophthalmologist at St James University Hospital, Leeds. Mr Galloway qualified from medical school at Newcastle University in 1994. He trained initially at Bristol Eye Hospital and later at the Vancouver Eye Care Centre in Canada before he accepted a Consultant role in Leeds in 2003.

Consultant Ophthalmologist at St James's University Hospital, Leeds. Mr Mokete qualified from medical school at the University of Bristol in 1992, and continued his ophthalmic training on the South Thames rotation of the London Deanery.

He then completed advanced subspecialty training in medical retina at Moorfields before completing a vitreoretinal surgery Fellowship in Brighton and a further Fellowship at St Thomas' Hospital in London.

Mr Pauw relocated to England in 2001 and has been a consultant ophthalmologist at the Mid Yorkshire NHS Hospitals Trust since 2001. Mr Mahmoud Sarhan studied at Brighton University and Damascus University. He has held positions as Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-retinal Surgeonat the Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Associate Specialist Vitreo-retinal Surgeon at Prince Charles Eye Unit, Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust andVitreo-retinal Fellow at Western Sussex Hospitals. He also holds a Post Graduate Certificate of Medical Education from Brighton University.

Mr Woon specialises in retinal, vitreo-retinal and cataract surgery. He gained an honours degree in physics at Churchill College, Cambridge before transferring to study medicine. He qualified in 1981 and subsequently trained at St. Thomas' Hospital to become an ophthalmic surgeon. He became the Pocklington Fellow in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery at St. Thomas' Hospital before taking up a consultant post at the Leeds General Infirmary.

In Leeds, his time is split between providing general ophthalmic work and providing a regional tertiary vitreo-retinal service. Patients who need specialist vitreo-retinal surgery are referred to him across the whole of Yorkshire. He has a special interest in macular hole surgery and has published on this subject. He is currently performing research with Professor Greig at the University of Leeds on the mechanism by which macular hole surgery is effective.

Mr Woon has held a substantive post at Leeds General Infirmary since 1995. Having originally qualified in Experimental Physics, Mr Woon has continued his links by collaborating with the Physics Department at Leeds University on a project on the 'physics of macular hole surgery'.
