About The London Allergy Clinic

The Allergy Clinic was established in 1982 by a group of  London based Physicians in specialist consultancy posts covering Paediatrics, Respiratory Medicine, Dermatology and Immunology. They all shared a special interest in Allergy and so set up the UK's first dedicated full-time private allergy clinic. Professor Warner completed his undergraduate medical training in the School of Medicine, University of Sheffield and his initial paediatric experience was at the Children''s Hospital, Sheffield working under the mentor-ship of Professor Ronald Illingworth. 

He acquired his MRCP(UK) having worked for two years in adult medicine with a particular focus on respiratory disease.  He then moved to the Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street as a Registrar and subsequently a Research Fellow and then Senior Registrar rotating through Queen Elizabeth hospital, Hackney and the London hospital. 

His first consultant post was a joint appointment between St Mary's and the Brompton hospital. In 1982 he helped establish the London Allergy Clinic before moving to Southampton as Professor of Child Health in 1990 and finally back to London as Professor of Paediatrics and Head of Department at Imperial College St Mary's hospital campus from September 2006 to April 2013.  He is also Hon Professor of Paediatrics in the University of Cape Town.

In 2008 he became Director of Research for the Women and Children's Clinical Programme Group, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHT). He was the lead for paediatrics in both the Biomedical Research Centre in ICHT and the NW London CLAHRC (Collaboration for Applied Health Research and Care) and was President of the Academic Paediatrics Association.

Professor Warner's research has focused on the early life origins of asthma and related allergic and respiratory disorders.  He has published over 400 papers in scientific journals on these topics.  He was Editor in Chief of the journal Paediatric Allergy and Immunology from 1997-2010 and chairman of the paediatric section of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology for 5 years until 2010.  He was also a member of the Speciality and Training committee of the World Allergy Organisation and a past Trustee of the charity known as The Anaphylaxis Campaign. 

He was a member of the Advisory Committee for Novel Foods and Processes of the Food Standards Agency for 12 years until 2012 and was recognised for his work in food allergy research by the award of an OBE in 2013.

After receiving several undergraduate prizes, Professor Greaves graduated MB BS from the University of London. Subsequently he obtained the membership of the Royal College of Physicians, was elected a Fellow in 1974 and graduated MD (London). Professor Greaves was a graduate student and UK Medical Research Council Fellow for 3 years at University College London where he proceeded to a PhD (pharmacology) (Faculty of Medicine) by thesis. His dermatological training was at St. John's Institute of Dermatology, London and the Royal Victoria Infirmary, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Professor Greaves was appointed Clinical Professor and Head at St. John's Institute of Dermatology in 1975, and subsequently Dean of the Institute. Following his retirement, and at the request of the Persatuan Dermatologi Malaysia, he was appointed Clinical Professor (Dermatology) at the University Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2001 with the remit of establishing a specialist training course in Dermatology for Malaysia. This course is flourishing at the present time.
In 2003 Professor Greaves re-located to Singapore, initially at Singapore General Hospital and later at the National Skin Centre Singapore with the title of Clinical Professor, National University of Singapore and was elected Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore. During this period he carried out original research on the clinical, histopathological and immunopathological manifestations of the skin in dengue haemorrhagic fever. He was, at Singapore General Hospital, deeply involved in coping with SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) which claimed many Singaporean lives (vide Greaves MW. Coping with SARS: a day in the life of a UK Dermatologist in Singapore General Hospital J Amer Acad Dermatol. Vol 50, March 2004).
He and his wife narrowly escaped death due to the Dec 26th 2004 tsunami whilst vacationing in Dusit Laguna resort, Phuket (vide Greaves MW. Killer waves at yuletide: a hair-raising experience. J Amer Acad Dermatol. Vol 52 Special Article. June 2005)
Since returning to the UK in 2007, Professor Greaves has worked as an NHS consultant in the Cutaneous Allergy Clinic at St. John's Institute of Dermatology, St. Thomas' Hospital, and as a specialist in dermatology and dermatological allergy here, at the London Allergy Clinic.

Dr. Cecilia Trigg is a Consultant Allergy Specialist (Physician). She qualified as a doctor in 1983 (King’s College Hospital, London) and has specialised in Allergy since 1987.

Dr. Trigg trained in Allergy at St. Bartholomew’s and Guy’s Hospital in London and was awarded an MD in 1992 for original research on Bronchial Responsiveness. She has been a registered Specialist since 1999. She is a senior Consultant Allergist, leading for food allergy and transition from paediatric to adult allergy at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.

Dr. Trigg has special interests in food allergy, hayfever, asthma and the challenges faced by young people growing up with multiple allergies. She has written a number of original articles and research papers

Dr. Mirakian is a consultant in allergy at the Addenbrookes' University Hospital (part time) and an Honorary Consultant at the Royal National Throat Nose Ear Hospital/UCLH. She was one of the early members of the Standards of Care Committee of the British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI). Her main interests relate to the field of drug allergy, rhinology and allergen specific desensitisation therapy.

She has contributed to the preparation of several national guidelines for the management of allergic conditions and is the lead author of the BSACI guideline on the 'management of drug allergy'. She is currently leading on the preparation of the Guideline for the 'management of allergy to beta lactam''. Her main interest in rhinology is on the management of 'Aspirin Exacerbated Airways disease'.

 

In addition Dr. Mirakian has teaching commitments; in particular as one of the teachers on the annual BSc course for Immunology, Autoimmunity and Transplantation at UCL and as teacher on the annual MSc course in Allergy at Imperial College.

In 1982 he became Consultant Physician in General and Respiratory medicine at Harefield and West Herts Hospital Group and in 1984 was appointed to the Asthma and Clinical Allergy Department at the Royal Brompton Hospital. He retired from the West Herts Hospital Group in 2004 but continues as Honorary Consultant in Allergy and Clinical immunology at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Dr. Rutkowski is a Consultant Allergist at the Department of Allergy, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in London, a European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and World Allergy Organisation Centre of Excellence. He completed a dedicated 5-year specialist allergy training programme at Cambridge University Hospital.

Dr. Rutkowski has extensive experience in all aspects of allergy care. He sees patients with anaphylaxis; food allergy; urticaria and angioedema; drug, vaccine and latex allergy; gastrointestinal allergy; venom allergy; allergic asthma; hay fever, allergic and nonallergic rhinitis/sinusitis/conjunctivitis and offers desensitisation (immunotherapy) treatment.

?Dr. Rutkowski leads the largest anti-IgE  service for chronic spontaneous urticaria in the UK. He works alongside his dermatology colleagues in the first UK joint allergy/dermatology Difficult Urticaria Clinic at St John's Institute of Dermatology. He is a member of the EAACI Task Force on paediatric urticaria.
Dr. Rutkowski is a published author in the field of drug allergy and contributes increasingly to the education and training of MSc students, allergists, GPs and general physicians at a national and international level.
In addition to his clinical duties Dr. Rutkowski sits on the Council of the Clinical Immunology and Allergy Section of the Royal Society of Medicine and the Allergy Specialist Advisory Committee of the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board.

Dr. Chakravarti completed his MBBS and MD (Paediatrics) in Mumbai in 1977 and 1981. He then trained in the UK and USA at The Columbia University Paediatric Residency programme and The Medical Centre of Delaware. He completed his Fellowship training in Allergy & Clinical Immunology at the Childrens' Hospital of Philadelphia and The Hospital of

the University of Pennsylvania. His specialist interests include asthma, anaphylaxis, urticaria, hay fever, eczema, food allergy/intolerances, gastrointestinal allergies and oral desensitisation to inhalant allergens.

On returning to the UK as consultant at the Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust in Harlow,

Dr. Chakravarti set up one of the first specialist paediatric allergy services in a district general hospital in the UK, established a Cystic Fibrosis service, and provided immunodeficiency and infectious diseases expertise for paediatric patients. He has also treated adult allergy patients for over 18 years. He has been a specialist trainer and has trained and mentored numerous paediatric specialists.

Dr. Chakravarti is a member of the  Royal Society of Medicine, British Medical Association, British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology, Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
Dr. Chakravarti was awarded the “Princess Award’ by his NHS Trust (the only clinician recipient to date) for clinical excellence  and the Allergy UK Professionals Award, which is nominated by local patients.

Dr. Karim studied medicine at Cambridge University and Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals, qualifying in 1993. He then trained at Guy’s under Dr Lawrence Youlten in Allergy, and at St Thomas’ under Prof Graham Hughes in Connective Tissue Diseases.

He was appointed as a Consultant Immunologist at Frimley Park and Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals in 2004. Since late 2015, he has practised at Frimley Park Hospital and other hospitals in the Surrey area and has a broad clinical practice in Allergy, Autoimmunity and Immunodeficiency.

Dr. Karim has been a member of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology Council for several years, and the Chair of the Clinical Immunology Committee 2014-17 as well as being on the committee for the NICE Quality Standards on Drug Allergy in 2015.

Dr. Karim is also a lecturer at The University of Surrey, and King’s College London.
