About Specialist Skin Clinic -London Branch

Everyone sweats – it’s normal and necessary to control the body’s temperature, particularly in warm weather, during illness or when exercising.

However, many people can suffer from excessive sweating at inappropriate times, typically in the underarm area or the hands and feet to such a degree that it can cause distress and embarrassment and even affect an individual’s ability to do certain jobs.

There are a number of treatment options that vary in terms of effectiveness and longevity but recently much research has been done into the development of new technology that promises to provide a more long-term and significant reduction in excessive sweating.

The Clinic offers miraDry at two locations, London and Cardiff, and is the only clinic outside of London offering this innovative and effective treatment for excessive sweating.

Excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, is a condition where the sufferer sweats more than normal, often at inappropriate times.

Sweating is the method by which the body regulates its temperature and most people produce about a litre of sweat per day. However, those with hyperhidrosis can produce up to ten times that and it often causes great distress and even prevents sufferers from having a normal social and professional life.

Dr Maria Gonzalez of the Clinic in London and Cardiff has a great deal of experience in treating those with hyperhidrosis and is able to give patients advice and guidance on the different treatments available.

There are specially designed antiperspirants available, containing aluminium chloride, which are usually prescribed first. Iontophoresis is another potential option if the antiperspirants are ineffective. This procedure involves a low voltage electrical current being passed through the problem area and some patients find this very effective, particularly for the hands and feet.

One treatment that has proved very successful, and Dr Maria Gonzalez offers this to her Cardiff and London excessive sweating patients, is the use of botillium injections. This toxin has long been used to treat dynamic wrinkles and it works by temporarily paralysing the nerve.

If injected into the underarm area it can block the nerves that supply the sweat glands and prevent the glands from producing sweat for a period of up to seven months.

Surgery is a long-term solution to excessive sweating and it involves either removing the sweat glands or dividing the nerves that supply the sweat glands. Many patients are reluctant to embark on the surgical route as they wish to avoid the associated risks and side effects. So there has been much research into finding a safe, long-term solution to the problem of excessive sweating.

miraDry is an innovative and cutting-edge solution to hyperhidrosis and Dr Maria Gonzalez is one of the few clinicians in London to offer the miraDry excessive sweating treatment.

Excessive Sweating Treatment

The best successful treatment for excessive sweating is the use of miraDry for a lasting reduction of underarm sweat. MiraDry is a safe, clinically proven, FDA-cleared solution for significantly reducing underarm sweat. It’s an outpatient procedure performed in your physician’s office, and it doesn’t involve any surgical incisions or cuts. miraDry works by delivering precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to the underarm area, eliminating the underarm sweat glands.

Two procedures are typically recommended, 3 months apart, to maximize the quality and duration of results. Each appointment generally lasts about an hour.

miraDry is the only FDA-cleared procedure that provides a lasting reduction of underarm sweat in a completely non-invasive way. Other treatment options, including antiperspirants and toxins, aim to temporarily disable the sweat glands for varying lengths of time – requiring repeat treatments to maintain effectiveness. Other options involve surgery, which poses inherent risks.
