The endodontist makes a canal in the crown of the tooth that allows for removal of the damaged pulp. After removal, the dentist cleans the canal and shapes it to a feasible form for filling. In some cases the dentist may choose to use medications for preventing infection by removing germs from the teeth. During the final visit, the dentist cleans and fills the root canal and pulp chamber, then applies a gold or porcelain crown over the tooth to provide extra strength and protection. The primary goal of endodontic treatment is to create an environment within the root canal system which allows for healing and continued maintenance of the health of periradicular tissue. A successful procedure is one which has removed bacteria in the tooth and completely filled the canals.
